ST. MARYS â€“ A sizable crowd was on hand for the first Elk County Gas Task Force educational seminar, held Wednesday evening at St. Marys Area Middle School.
Elk County Commissioner June Sorg acted as the hostess as she introduced each of the seminar's three speakers: Jim Clark of Penn State Cooperative Extension, who spoke about water issues; Mike Donovan of Seneca Resources, who presented a brief overview of Marcellus Shale; and attorney Tom Wagner of St. Marys, who provided information on land leasing.
WILCOX â€“ The Jones Township Municipal Authority will be increasing security at their reservoir along High Street after authority members voted unanimously to add two street lights to its perimeter.
According to chairman Carl Johnson, one of the street lights will cost the municipal authority $200 to install and then cost $12 to $16 a month for each light.
"I talked to the fellow at West Penn Power," Johnson said. "They said if you want an additional light on the next pole up about 50 to 75 feet there it would be about $200, but they can do it at a one-time cost."
The Ridgway Area School District's Students of the Month were honored during Tuesday night's school board meeting.
Third-grader Stephen Freeburg was selected as the elementary school Student of the Month for May. Stephen said he was very excited about receiving the award. His favorite subjects are math, spelling and reading. When he graduates high school he would like to become a third-grade teacher. Stephen's favorite teacher is Mrs. Simons because â€śshe tells us the sentences and sometimes reads to the whole class.â€ť
