June is National Dairy Month

Pennsylvania is ranked fifth in the nation for milk production and second in the nation for the number of dairy farms (Wisconsin has the most dairy farms).
Pennsylvania is home to 16 percent of the nation’s dairy farms and more than 99 percent of those farms are family-owned businesses.
Pennsylvania’s leading industry is agriculture and its biggest economic sector is dairy, which represents 40 percent of agriculture revenue.
Every nine cows support one job. With 530,000 cows in the state, about 60,000 jobs are supported.

Flood watch in effect for Elk County

Widespread heavy to record daily rainfall amounts are expected to fall Saturday and into Saturday night.
Unusually strong low pressure at the surface and aloft will move slowly northeast from the Ohio Valley through the middle Atlantic region throughout the weekend.
Widespread heavy rain will fall and the risk for flooding, especially on smaller streams and creeks, will be high.
A flood watch remains in effect through late Saturday night. Elk and McKean counties are listed among the extensive list of affected counties.

Wilcox American Legion baseball falls to Bradford

WILCOX – The Wilcox American Legion team lost 13-0 in five innings to Bradford Friday night at Jones Township Community Park.
Bradford scored three runs in the first and fifth innings and had a seven-run second inning.
Wilcox had just one hit in the game, a long Ben Freeburg double to right field.

St. Marys major softball all stars defeat Elk County

KERSEY – The St. Marys Little League Softball major league all stars kept their season alive Friday evening with a 12-0 five-inning victory over Elk County in a contest played at Fox Township Community Park.
The St. Marys team scored four runs in the first, six in the third, and two in the fifth en route to the victory.
Brianna Grotzinger went the distance in the circle for St. Marys, giving up two hits, walking one, and striking out six in the shutout.

Camper dies in storm in ANF

WARREN – A fierce thunderstorm in northwestern Pennsylvania resulted in the death of a camper who was camping with a church group in a remote area of the Allegheny National Forest. The storm came through the Minister Creek Campground around 6 a.m. Tuesday causing power outages and wide-spread downed trees.

Ridgway Legion baseball strands 16 runners in 4-1 defeat

Ridgway Legion had the baserunners and the hits against Bradford.
Just not that clutch hit to sway the outcome.
Ridgway left the bases loaded three times and stranded 16 runners for the game in a 4-1 loss to Bradford Wednesday night at Sandy Beach Recreational Park.
"Sixteen runners left on. Three times with the bases loaded," Ridgway coach Ryan LaBenne said. "You can't win games if you can't score. That was the key."

Area youth featured in ECCOTA's 'Fame, Jr.' production

Youth of all ages are bringing the 80s back to life during the "Fame, Jr." production offered through the Elk County Council on the Arts (ECCOTA) Summer Theatre Camp. The public can catch the Fame-tastic performance today at 2 p.m. in Ridgway High School auditorium. Students prepared for the show by attending a week long camp which focused on those interested in the performing arts.

St. Marys Legion downs Wilcox, 14-2

WILCOX – A strong start in the first two innings allowed St. Marys to take a 14-2, five-inning win over Wilcox in American Legion Baseball action Friday evening at Jones Township Community Park.
St. Marys scored five runs in the first inning and six more in the second to take an 11-0 lead after two innings. St. Marys finished with eight hits for the game but the team took advantage of being walked 15 times by Wilcox pitching.

The Ridgway Rifle Club will once again host the NRA National Silhouette Championships this coming...
