ST. MARYS â€“ The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen junior high basketball squad won the championship game of this year's ECCHS Boys Junior High Basketball Tournament, defeating the Crusaders 42-33 on Wednesday evening at ECC.
In the consolation game, Ridgway defeated Brockway 54-18.
Neither team was able to gain much of an advantage in the first period and the back-and-forth action left the score tied at 7-all at the end of seven minutes of play. St. Marys came alive in the second quarter, outscoring ECC 14-5 to take a 21-12 halftime lead.
ST. MARYS â€“ The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders edged the Lady Dutch 31-26 in the title game of the ECCHS Girls Junior Varsity Basketball Tournament at ECCHS on Wednesday evening.
In the consolation game, the Johnsonburg Lady Rams defeated the Ridgway Lady Elkers 39-16.
The first period of play saw the score knotted up at 7-all; however, the Lady Dutch outscored the Lady Crusaders 8-6 in the second quarter to take a slim 15-13 halftime lead.
ST. MARYS â€“ The Ridgway Elkers captured the ECCHS Boysâ€™ Junior Varsity Basketball Holiday Tournament Wednesday night by defeating Elk County Catholic by 57-39 score in a game played in the ECCHS main gym.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch defeated the Johnsonburg Rams 36-29 in the consolation game.
The championship game saw both teams score 13 first quarter points. The Elkers outscored the Crusaders by a 16-6 margin to open a 29-19 halftime lead.
ST. MARYS â€“ The annual Elk County Holiday Basketball Tournament, featuring the girls' and boys' varsity basketball squads from St. Marys Area High School, Elk County Catholic High School, Johnsonburg Area High School and Ridgway Area High School, kicks off this afternoon at the SMAHS gymnasium, and will once again feature a variety of fundraisers for the Coaches vs. Cancer program.
According to Roben Daghir, volunteer survivor for outreach and awareness, there will once again be a Coaches vs. Cancer table located in the foyer near the main entrance to the gymnasium.
This year 221 children from Cameron, Elk, McKean, and Potter counties received gifts and clothing as part of the 2011 Pat Work Memorial Christmas Project.
Now in its third year, the project is an endeavor of Dickinson Center, Inc. (DCI) and named in memory of Patricia "Pat" Work, a therapist with the organization for several years prior to her death in 2003.
"Pat worked with children and always made an extra effort at Christmas to make sure they had gifts, etc.," said Heidi Thomas, chief fiscal officer/chief operations officer for Dickinson.

Phyllis J. Terwilliger, 62, of 114 Flagstone Rd., St. Marys, died on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh following a lengthy illness.
She was born Feb. 4, 1949 in DuBois, a daughter of the late Harry and Alice Clark Nichols.
On Jan. 21, 1967 in Brockway, she married Harold Terwilliger, who survives.
Mrs. Terwiliger worked for many years at the Corner Restaurant and enjoyed her many years as a waitress.Â She also
enjoyed sewing, playing bingo and playing video games with her family.Â Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her
Genevieve (Jibby) M. Aiello, age 82, of 126 South St., Ridgway, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011 at her residence.
She was born May 2, 1929 in St. Marys, daughter of the late John H. and Genevieve Elizabeth (Benninger) Smith. She married John Joseph Aiello on Aug. 8, 1956, he survives.
Kathryn F. Paes, 91, of Ridgmont Assisted Living Facility in Ridgway and formerly of 3809 Grant Rd., died Monday evening, Dec. 26, 2011, at her residence.
She was born Jan. 24, 1920 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Albert and Katherine (Simon) Fuhrer.
She married Elwood M. Paes in 1952 and he preceded her in death in 1970.
County commissioners on Tuesday approved an $11.3 million spending plan that features no new taxes highlighted with a 3-percent wage increase for bargaining and non-bargaining county employees.
"The 2012 budget was presented to the public at our meeting earlier in the month," said Elk County Commissioner Daniel R. Freeburg. "We went into the public participation and review process, it's been on display online as well as physically in our office, and I don't believe we've had any comments on it."
