Paul Samuel Thomas

March 1, 2011

Paul Samuel Thomas, age 85, a resident at Parkside Elder Care in Brockway, died Feb. 28, 2011, at DuBois Nursing Home.
He was born March 15, 1925, in Ridgway, son of Samuel P. and Twila Stewart Thomas
A protestant by faith, Paul enjoyed woodworking and tinkering with cars. He was a licensed electrician and inspector; a certified carpenter; a supervisor for Boni Candy Company servicing out of Brockport. His family was the owners of the Dodge and Plymouth Garages in DuBois and Ridgway. He also performed towing services for the surrounding areas.

Ridgway claims three district wrestling titles, Wolfe wins first for Rams

CLARION – Ridgway finished with three district champions and Jesse Wolfe claimed his first for the Johnsonburg Rams at the District 9 Individual Wrestling Championships Saturday at Clarion University.
Ridgway wrestling will send six to the Northwest Regional Championship and Johnsonburg will send two. The Elkers finished second in the team score with 145 points. Johnsonburg was 11th with 47 points. Brookville was the team winner with 197.5 team points.

Crusaders rally to defeat Falcons 55-52

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Crusaders advanced to the semifinals of the District 9-A Tournament with a thrilling 55-52 victory over the Coudersport Falcons on Saturday night at the Aaron J. Straub Gym at Elk Catholic.
The Crusaders tied the game at 47-all on a Tyler Herzing trey with 17 seconds left in regulation. The Elk County defense then prevented the Falcons from getting a good shot off, thus forcing the game into overtime. In the overtime period the Crusaders outscored the Falcons 8-5 (six by Pearsall and two by Simons) to lock up the win and advance on in the playoffs.

Betty F. Nelson

Betty F. Nelson, 85, formerly of Wilcox, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, at Elk Haven Nursing Home in St. Marys.
Born Dec. 16, 1925, in Washington, D.C., she was a daughter of Raymond F. and Margaret Eleden Fleming. On July 14, 1958, in Arlington, Va., she married James F. Nelson who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Nelson, a homemaker, had worked at Stackpole. She also had been employed as a cook at the former Cherry’s Restaurant in Johnsonburg.
She was a past member of the Wilcox American Legion Auxiliary and had served as a Sunday School teacher at the Wilcox Presbyterian Church.

Forrest "Skip" Clair Milliron

Forrest "Skip" Clair Milliron, age 75, of Warren, passed away peacefully into eternal life on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011 at 12:24 p.m. at Cleveland Clinic of natural causes.
On Feb. 20, 1936, in Perry Township, Forrest Clinton & Letha Luella (Vasbinder) Milliron gave birth to their son, Forrest.
He married the love of his life, Lori Hogue, on July 13, 1986 and they enjoyed 24 years of marriage together.

Cardinals top Elkers in 2OT, 68-59

Ridgway twice had the opportunity to win the game with the last possession but both times the Elkers were unable to find the hoop as DuBois Central Catholic exploded in the second overtime period Friday night for a 68-59 win in the quarterfinal round of the Class A District 9 playoffs.
Down by 10 points at halftime, the Elkers were able to claw their way back into the game to force overtime at 50-all at the end of regulation.

Rams fall in second round to Union

RIMERSBURG – Johnsonburg was the team that wouldn't go away the whole game.
In the end, a tying field goal was not in the cards for the Rams as Union held on for a 49-46 victory over Johnsonburg Friday night in the quarterfinals of the District 9 Class playoffs at Union High School.
"We felt we could compete with anyone in District 9," Johnsonburg coach Bill Shuey said. "It's heartbreaking to lose. We had opportunities to win this game. It boils down to who made the shots, who made the plays. Union did and we didn't."

District wrestling opens

CLARION – Area wrestlers competed in the opening day of the District 9 Individual Wrestling Championships Friday at Clarion University.
For Ridgway, Corey Bush is in the semifinals at 119 pounds along with teammate Slade Horner at 135, Kyle Caggiano at 140, Jake Himes at 152, D.J. Skraba at 160, Seth Stahl at 171 and Jesse Sheasley at 285-- for Johnsonburg, Jesse Wolfe at 125 and Max Zimmerman at 135 are in the semifinals.

Evelyn Mae "Beano" Imbrogno

Evelyn Mae "Beano" Imbrogno, age 85, of 70 Faries St., Wilcox, and formerly of Johnsonburg, died Friday morning, Feb. 25, 2011 at her residence.
She was born May 6, 1925, in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late Herman W. and Mary Ellen McGonigal Nelson. On April 23, 1950, she married Peter A. Imbrogno in the Holy Rosary Rectory, Johnsonburg; he died on Jan. 4, 1989.
She resided in Wilcox since 1990 and had resided in Johnsonburg most of her life.

Michael Allen Wonderly

Michael Allen Wonderly, 58, died on Feb. 23, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. following a brief illness.
He was born May 25, 1952 in Ridgway, the son of Neil and Marcella Stegar Wonderly.
He was the fifth of seven children, the only son, and man of the house from age 17. He was doted on in a house of seven women. Through high school, he worked for Charlie Steger Senior as a mason.
