Janis M. Sample

Janis M. Sample, 53, of 148 School St., Kane, and formerly of Wilcox, died on Monday, Oct. 31, 2011 at Kane Community Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born on August 19, 1958 in Ridgway, daughter of Thomas J. and Dorothy Dush Redmond.
She married Jeffrey A. Sample on May 14, 1982. He survives.
She resided in Kane for the last 22 years. She graduated from Johnsonburg Area High School, Class of 1976 and from Median Technical School of Pittsburgh as an Animal Health Tech. She was employed by Kinzua Veterinary Clinic in Warren for 10 years.

Schreiber qualifies for state cross country meet

The snowy weather and muddy conditions on Saturday in Ridgway did little to slow down the Elk County Catholic High School girls’ and boys’ cross country squads in the District 9 Cross Country Championships held at the Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School in Ridgway. The girls’ team won their 11th consecutive AA team title by four points over Northern Potter, while the boys’ team finished second after being edged by Oswayo Valley by one point. Both squads will advance to compete in the state meet next weekend in Hershey.

Herzing having 'tree'-riffic time as forester

"If a tree falls in the forest..." -- Toby Herzing is the guy you'll want to talk to about it.
Herzing has been the recreation forester for the Elk State Forest and a service forester for Elk and Cameron counties for nearly seven years.
As a recreation forester, he works with the management and maintenance staff on recreational activities and projects such as trail maintenance, hiking, biking, horseback riding, snowmobiling, geocaching, hunting and fishing.
"The State Forest provides many recreational opportunities for the forest users," Herzing said.

Elkers host banquet

Ridgway boys golf celebrated the season with a banquet Sunday night at Laurel Mill Golf Club.
"As we get together to close out the season, as the head coach I can only hope that it was an enjoyable experience for everybody involved," Ridgway boys golf head coach Dave Zawatski said. "Records, scores and streaks which will soon be forgotten aside, I learned long ago that it is the memories of the 'journey' that will always be cherished. When I look back on the season down the road, I will most definitely have a ton of good memories."

Crusaders win 7-0 over Elkers

ST. MARYS – In a game filled primarily with defense, one touchdown made the difference as to which of these county rivals goes to the district playoffs.
Cole Gerber's 1-yard touchdown run with 2:56 left in the fourth quarter was enough to give Elk County Catholic a 7-0 win over Ridgway Friday night at Dutch Country Stadium and push Elk County Catholic to a District 9 Class A playoff berth.
The Crusaders moved to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the AML South while Ridgway drops to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the AML South.

Reiki practice new to the area

JOHNSONBURG – Elaine Parana is a Reiki Practitioner. Parana has been practicing Reiki since 2002 but just recently opened her own shop in her home.
She says Reiki is an old Japanese hands-on healing and relaxation treatment.
“Reiki promotes healing in the body, mind and spirit,” Parana said. “It is an alternative healing method that enhances regular medical care.”
Some people may be skeptical of Reiki, but Parana assures it is essentially a channeling of energy from the universe.

Clark A. Hawkins, Ph.D.

Clark A. Hawkins, Ph.D., 78, of 528 Sawmill Run Road, Kersey, died Thursday, October 27, 2011 at the Elk Regional Health Center.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service to be held in the Toby Methodist Church on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Joni Williams officiating. Burial will be in the Elkton Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.

ECCOTA awards grants

The Elk County Council on the Arts [ECCOTA] in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts [PCA] awarded 15 grants to organizations in Cameron, Clarion, Elk, Forest, Jefferson, McKean and Potter counties.
On Wednesday evening, ECCOTA and the PCA awarded $19,779 in grant funds through the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts [PPA] program to organizations to support arts activities in the region.

Ridgway Halloween activities slated for this weekend

The Ridgway Lions Club is sponsoring the Halloween parade set for this Saturday, Oct. 29.
The parade is an annual event. Tracey Amacher, member of the Lions Club said the parade has been ongoing since before she can remember.
“I can’t remember exactly how long it’s been going on,” Amacher said. “But my children are grown and they remember it.”
Lineup for those entering in the parade begins at 2:30 p.m. at the Courthouse Annex. The parade will begin shortly after at 3 p.m. The Ridgway High School band will be providing a mixture of music as they will lead the parade.

Johnsonburg Halloween festivities scheduled

Johnsonburg has many Halloween festivities in the itinerary for the upcoming weekend. On Saturday, October 29, the annual Halloween parade is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Registration for those entering in the parade begins at 3:30 p.m. and runs till 4 p.m. Those in the parade are beginning lineup at 4:30 p.m. in the Cherry Square Mall parking lot. The parade will travel down Market Street and end at the Johnsonburg Community Center where judging of the costumes will take place.
