Donald C. Smoot Jr.

Donald C. Smoot Jr., age 62, of Stump Creek, formerly of Ridgway for many years, died Monday, June 27, 2011, at his residence after a short illness.
He was born Oct. 29, 1948, in Philadelphia, son of Donald Sr. and Elizabeth (Herens) Smoot, deceased. He married Sandra (Thompson) Smoot, also of Stump Creek; she survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served during Vietnam. He was formerly an orderly at Elk Regional Health Center in Ridgway and was Catholic by faith. He attended Bishop Newman Catholic High School in Philadelphia and enjoyed camping.

New 911 Center, no new taxes

With tax revenue already budgeted and a bond issue, Elk County officials have been able to purchase the Industrial Technology Education Center [ITEC] to house the county's 911 Center with no new taxes.
"In the taxes that we bring in in our budgeted tax revenue, there is a small percentage for at least the last 20 years that has been levied for capital improvements," said Daniel R. Freeburg, one of three commissioners for Elk County.

Program offers confidential option for care of unwanted newborns

As many people have read or seen in news reports, a northeastern Pennsylvania couple was arrested this month on charges of killing their unwanted newborn. While this is an extreme and rare situation, it is important for people to know that the state has a program in place to help people who are unwilling or unable to care for their child to prevent such tragedies from occurring.

Outreach Center presents final performance

The River Outreach Center held the final drama performance of Reality Outreach Ministries "Heaven's Gates and Hell's Flames" Tuesday night along Gillis Avenue in Ridgway.
"I have known of this program for 20 some years now," said pastor Bill Braley of Living Waters Christian Church. "I saw what a huge impact it had on people that attended. I have never seen an audience moved as much as I have in this production and that is the reason why we went all out to try and get them here.
"They are very busy. We had to book them way in advance."

David J. Hanlin, age 75, of Erie, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday June 21, 2011 at “Eagles Nest,” his acreage of timber and wetlands in Corry. He was pursuing his passion of habitat enhancement to aid wildlife.

Minor League All-Stars host Warren

The Ridgway Minor League All-Stars lost 12-6 to the Warren Americans Tuesday at the Ridgway Little League fields along Grant Road.
Warren used an 11-run first inning to take the lead, a lead the Americans would ultimately hang on to.
Ridgway, designated as the visiting team in the game, led 1-0 after the first inning as Matt Dush reached and later came around to score.

School district adopts final budget

The Ridgway Area School District held a special board meeting Monday night to adopt the 2011-2012 General Fund Budget with total revenues and expenditures of $12,023,105 as presented at the May board meeting.
The budget was not approved at the regular school board meeting held June 14 when board members Lucy Bobby, Kathy Lampman and president Eugene Pierce voted in favor of the general fund budget and board member Bill Seely voted against it.
On Monday night, the motion was carried to adopt the budget on a 5-1 vote.

Noxious weed survey to be conducted

ST. MARYS – Elk County Conservation District Manager Steve Putt announced during the group's meeting Monday evening that organization is teaming up with the Headwaters Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) to conduct an invasive and noxious weed survey on a limited number of area properties between now and the end of August. According to Putt, only 17 property surveys will be conducted.
"We have the ability to do up to 17 of these surveys and at this point we're open to do 17," Putt said.

Wilcox American Legion team downs Smethport

WILCOX – The Wilcox American Legion team continued its strong play this season with a 9-0 victory over Smethport Monday at Jones Township Community Park.
The win moves Wilcox to 10-1 on the season.
Cole Peterson pitched a complete-game shutout for Wilcox with no walks and 10 strikeouts.

Ridgway Major League softball one win from D-10 North title

June 27, 2011

The Ridgway Major League softball all-stars are one win from the District 10 North Division title after an 11-5 win over Bradford Saturday at the Ridgway Little League fields.
Ridgway will host a game on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against the team which comes out of the loser's bracket.
Bradford opened the game with a pair of runs as Ashley Stoltz scored on a wild pitch and Bryn Manion scored on a Ridgway error.
