Elderly targets of new advance fee scam

A news release recently issued by the Ridgway-based state police cautions the public of to be aware of a new mail fraud scam which can steal both their money and their identity.

Phyllis J. Terwilliger, 62, of 114 Flagstone Rd., St. Marys, died on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh following a lengthy illness.
She was born Feb. 4, 1949 in DuBois, a daughter of the late Harry and Alice Clark Nichols.
On Jan. 21, 1967 in Brockway, she married Harold Terwilliger, who survives.
Mrs. Terwiliger worked for many years at the Corner Restaurant and enjoyed her many years as a waitress. She also
enjoyed sewing, playing bingo and playing video games with her family. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her

Genevieve (Jibby) M. Aiello

Genevieve (Jibby) M. Aiello, age 82, of 126 South St., Ridgway, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011 at her residence.
She was born May 2, 1929 in St. Marys, daughter of the late John H. and Genevieve Elizabeth (Benninger) Smith. She married John Joseph Aiello on Aug. 8, 1956, he survives.

Kathryn F. Paes

Kathryn F. Paes, 91, of Ridgmont Assisted Living Facility in Ridgway and formerly of 3809 Grant Rd., died Monday evening, Dec. 26, 2011, at her residence.
She was born Jan. 24, 1920 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Albert and Katherine (Simon) Fuhrer.
She married Elwood M. Paes in 1952 and he preceded her in death in 1970.

$11.3M spending plan approved

County commissioners on Tuesday approved an $11.3 million spending plan that features no new taxes highlighted with a 3-percent wage increase for bargaining and non-bargaining county employees.
"The 2012 budget was presented to the public at our meeting earlier in the month," said Elk County Commissioner Daniel R. Freeburg. "We went into the public participation and review process, it's been on display online as well as physically in our office, and I don't believe we've had any comments on it."

Ann K. Powell, 87, formerly of Wilcox, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011, at the Lutheran Home at Kane.
Born Aug. 28, 1924, in James City, she was a daughter of Joseph and Anna Mishulk  Gezik. She had been married to Norbert Powell who preceded her in death.
Surviving are one sister, Mary Morgan of James City; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents and husband, by three children and five brothers.

Diane M. Boroi

Diane M. Boroi, 65, of 461 Toby Rd., Kersey, died early Tuesday morning, Dec. 27, 2011, at Pinecrest Manor following a lengthy illness.
She was born Sept. 30, 1946, in Ridgway, daughter of the late Edwin and Dorothy (Miles) Swanson. On July 31, 1965, she married Irvin J. Boroi, who preceded her in death on Dec. 7, 2001.
She had resided in Kersey most of her life and was a member of the Toby United Methodist Church, the Fox Township Ambulance Service, the Fox Township Fire Department Auxiliary, and had been a Girl Scout leader. She had been employed by state Rep. Dan Surra.

Mild winter could extend PennDOT budget into summer

With a winter maintenance budget of $1.3 million and $2 million for Elk and McKean counties, respectively, Greg Sayers, PennDOT (Pa. Department of Transportation) county maintenance manager for the two counties, said he is prepared to battle Jack Frost nipping at the roads and bracing himself and his team for what he knows firsthand to be an often- unpredictable season.

Gunnar Clark Jude Hughes of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away Dec. 22, 2011 at Kansas City Hospice House surrounded by his immediate family.
Born on July 15, 1952, Gunnar was raised in Swarthmore. He graduated from Penn State University in 1979, where he earned degrees in journalism and economics. His college years were interrupted when he was drafted and he spent two years in an engineering battalion in Frankfurt, Germany.

Nancy L. Jones, 74, of Chestnut Street, St. Marys, died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011 at Pinecrest Manor after a lengthy illness.
She was born March 20, 1937 in Johnsonburg, the daughter of the late Paul and Helene (Kilhoffer) Stahli.
She was born and raised in Johnsonburg, lived 30 years in Ridgway and the past 15 years in St. Marys. She was a graduate of Johnsonburg High School, Class of 1954. She worked as a secretary for Ridgway Color, Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Elk County Prison Warden, retiring in 2009.
