First-grade teacher using hobby to inspire children

JOHNSONBURG – Beau Iorfido is another one of Johnsonburg Elementary School’s first-grade teachers.
Iorfido plans on using one of his own hobbies to teach the children.
“One of my favorite hobbies includes learning how to play the guitar,” Iorfido said. “This is something that I enjoy learning on my own time. It is also something that I will incorporate into my classroom.”
Iorfido says he has found that children love to sing along and learn while listening to music.

Ruling on forest stone may help in drilling case

Last week’s judicial ruling on the ownership of sandstone in the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) may help bring about a favorable court decision for forest oil and gas well drillers.
That’s the message given by R. Timothy McCrum, a Washington-based attorney who represents the Pennsylvania Independent Oil and Gas Association (PIOGA) and Minard Run Oil of Bradford.

Ridgway takes 22-stroke win over Kane

With an adjusted lineup Tuesday, the Ridgway Elkers strolled to a 22-stroke victory Tuesday at Laurel Mill Golf Course to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Ridgway senior Jordan Lundin shot a 41 to take medalist honors and teammate sophomore Sam Delhunty was four strokes behind with a 45; Ridgway seniors Eric Matheson, Aaron Sorge and Kyle Caggiano each shot 49 for a team total of 231 shots.
Ridgway senior Alex Oknefski and junior Tony Leithner both shot 51, and junior JoJo Jaques fired a 53 but those three did not factor into the scoring.

St. Marys soccer downs Johnsonburg

JOHNSONBURG – St. Marys boys soccer won its season opener 6-1 over Johnsonburg Tuesday night at Memorial Field in Johnsonburg.
“I’m satisfied,” St. Marys coach Russ Micale said. “We definitely have some bugs to work out of our system. As far as the game went, they improved as the game went on. That’s what you like to see. Every time we step on the field, we got to get better, we got to improve. We have a ways to go but we’ll get there.”

Ridgway soccer falls to Port Allegany

Ridgway soccer lost 5-0 to Port Allegany Tuesday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School in Ridgway.
Port scored in the 10th minute as Elliott Binder ripped a penalty kick into the back of the net.
Scott Brookens scored less than two minutes later for the Gators to make the margin 2-0.
With 26:51 left in the fist half, Eli Knapp upped the lead to 3-0. Brookens added a goal right before halftime to make the lead 4-0.
Brookens scored again midway through the second half for Port’s fifth goal.

CDBG project funds approved

Community Development Block Grant [CDBG] projects for the fiscal year are in line after a public hearing Tuesday and subsequent meeting to approve allocations.
Among the figures are $55,000 for "slum and blight remediation" for the clearance and demolition of slum and blight properties within the county.
"We're going to try to take care of some of the blighted properties in Elk County," said Tracy D. Gerber, CDBG coordinator. "We're trying to focus on some of the properties that are in the repository at the county level.

Officials stand behind impact fee

The Elk County Commissioners have publicly endorsed the implementation of a Marcellus Shale impact fee on each unconventional gas well in Pennsylvania.
"We had met with Senator [Joe] Scarnati and we were voicing our concerns for the human service side of this and they're going to be hit with this Marcellus Shale and housing, that part could be problematic," said Elk County Commissioner June H. Sorg. "I know a lot of folks are concerned about that and other programs of interest.

Sorg to mount write-in candidacy for district justice

ST. MARYS – Robert "Bert" Sorg has announced that he will mount a write-in campaign for Magisterial District Justice 59-3-03 for the Nov. 8 General Election.
"We're going to mount a good campaign. We're going to try it," Sorg said.

Butler Co. jury to hear Donachy trial on Oct. 10

ST. MARYS – A trial date for Lawrence Earl Donachy, 36, of St. Marys, accused of the 1999 homicide of St. Marys beautician Irene Challingsworth, has been set for Monday, Oct. 10 beginning at 9 a.m. in the Elk County Courthouse in Ridgway.
The trial is expected to continue for 10 business days until Friday, Oct. 21.
Jury selection will take place in Butler County on Friday, Sept. 16, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Betty E. Frank

Betty E. Frank, 76, of 675 Montmorenci Ave., Ridgway, and formerly of 231 Spruce St., died peacefully Monday morning, Sept. 5, 2011, at Mountain Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Clearfield.
She was born July 18, 1935, in Ridgway, daughter of the late James A. and Twelda E. (Gulnac) Richards. She was married to Edmund J. Frank, who preceded her in death in 2001.
