DA: The blood cries out for guilty verdict; jury hears it

January 25, 2012

BROOKVILLE — In his closing statement of Steven P. Rebert's double murder trial Tuesday, District Attorney Jeffrey Burkett invoked the voice of one of the victims, Wayne Shugar, and asked that the jury hear it, too.
"The blood of Wayne Shugar cries out in this courtroom," Burkett said, citing evidence that showed that four spots of Shugar's blood was found on the bottom of Rebert's work boots.
"Your DNA is the content of your person: It's responsible for your eye color, your personality, your height," he said.

Ramettes top Sheffield, stretch streak to six games

January 25, 2012

JOHNSONBURG – The Ramettes saw 11 players get into the scoring column Tuesday night as Johnsonburg (8-5) cruised to a 60-19 win over Sheffield (2-13).
The Ramettes, who extended their winning streak to six games, were led by junior Rhianon Fowler, who paced all scorers with 17 points and was the only player in double-figures for the night.
"We were able to get some work on our zone defense and our girls hit some shots," said Johnsonburg head girls varsity basketball coach Mike Zilkofski. "We usually see a man-to-man defense but I was happy with the way we came out and shot the ball.

Lady Elkers fall 35-23 to Lady Tide

January 24, 2012

Low point outputs in the first and third quarters ultimately doomed Ridgway in a 35-23 loss to Curwensville Tuesday night at Ridgway Area High School in an AML South game.
Ridgway scored two points in the first quarter and three in the third quarter.
"It was poor execution," Ridgway coach Glenn Schauer said. "Defensively, we only gave up 35 points, not too bad. Offensively, we turned the ball over to the other team. It was just poor execution. It's frustrating. Sometimes we play well and then in games we can win, we play like this, frustrating."
