Ridgway building destroyed in fire

Area fire departments were called out at 8:49 p.m. Sunday evening for a structure fire at a multi-resident building located at Allenhurst Avenue and Depot streets in Ridgway. The residents of the building were reportedly evacuated safely. The building was a total loss. No further information was available at press time.
Responding units were the Ridgway Fire Department, Johnsonburg Fire Department, Crystal Fire Department, Kersey Fire Department, Wilcox Fire Department and the Cameron County Fire Department.

Darcy L. Allegretto

Darcy L. Allegretto, 54, of 6989 Glen Hazel Rd., Wilcox, died Friday night, Feb. 3, 2012 at her residence following an illness of one year.
She was born on June 29,1957 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Richard "Bill" and Lucille Winters Silcosky.
On July 15, 1989, she married Lawrence "Larry" Allegretto, and he survives.
Formerly of Johnsonburg, she resided in Glen Hazel since 1985. She graduated from Johnsonburg High School in 1975.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Johnsonburg. She enjoyed cooking and baking. She also loved to be outside doing planting and yardwork.

Brookville wins Class AA team wrestling championship

DuBOIS – Ridgway wrestling lost 36-33 to Brookville in the District 9 team duals championships match Saturday afternoon at DuBois Area High School.
Brookville won seven of the 11 matches wrestled on the mat and eight of the 14 weight classes. The win serves as a redemption for Brookville who suffered a bitter defeat at the hands of the Elkers in the same spot one year ago.

Matheson has career night as Ridgway blows out Sheffield

Sheffield scored 44 points in Friday night's game.
Ridgway point guard Eric Matheson had almost as many by himself.
Matheson scored a career-high 38 points as the Elkers won 76-44 over Sheffield.
"Some nights you just feel like everything's going in," Matheson said. "This was one of those nights. It didn't matter where I was on the court, it just felt like it was going in."
Matheson hit seven 3-pointers on the game and started quickly with 15 first-quarter points and four treys in the first eight minutes.

Fast start, late baskets give Ramettes victory

JOHNSONBURG – The Ramettes regrouped Friday for a 54-31 win against visiting Curwensville as District 9 teams make their final push for the playoffs in the next two weeks.
Backed by a 15-point performance from junior Brittany Watts and 14 points from sophomore Chelsea Benson, Johnsonburg stretched their record to 11-7 with four games remaining on the schedule.
The latest victory, however, was not pretty.

Bendigo State Park Snow festival forthcoming

The 6th Annual Snow Festival at Bendigo State Park is scheduled for today, Saturday, Feb. 4, and runs from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. regardless of weather.
Events for the day include the snow box derby, ice fishing demo and more. Instruction to learn to snowshoe or cross country ski will be available, and local scout groups will be selling hot chocolate and hot dogs. Smokey the Bear will be at the festival from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The festival began to allow families to come together and enjoy one of Pennsylvania’s state parks.

Ridgway wrestling co-captains reflect on Gerber's last home match

As Ridgway wrestling enters the District 9 team duals this Saturday, Ridgway's co-captains reflect on head coach Gary Gerber's last home match which took place Tuesday night at Ridgway Area High School.
The trio of co-captains have a cavalcade of accomplishments within the Ridgway wrestling program. Senior Corey Bush is a 2-time district champion, 3-time regional qualifier, 2010 regional champion and 2-time state placewinner. Bush compared his time with the program to a roller coaster ride without many of the valleys.

Phil says six more weeks of winter

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Gov. Tom Corbett professed his early spring preferences just prior to Punxsutawney Phil's 126th annual prognostication early Thursday morning at Gobbler's Knob, but as history has shown, the Seer of Seer relies on nothing else except than his own instinct.
The result, as read by Vice President Mike Johnston: "As I look at the crowd of Gobbler's Knob, many shadows do I see; so six more weeks of winter it must be."
When asked if he was pleased with Punxsy Phil's prognostication, Corbett replied, "No. Now we've got to get PennDOT ready."

Municipal authority reinstates past due notice fee

The Ridgway Township Municipal Authority voted in favor of reinstating a $15 fee to send past due notices to customers during Thursday night's regular meeting.
Works superintendent Carl Gosnell explained that the board opted not to charge the $15 fee to send notices to customers during the transition period to the new water meter program.
"The due day now is fixed at the 22nd of each month and there will no changes," Gosnell said. "There should be no confusion as to this point on what the procedure is and how it works."
Chairman Ed LaValle suggested the fee be reinstated.

Deborah Lee Ciroli, died on Monday, Jan. 30, 2012 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Deborah was born Aug. 10, 1943, in Sheffield to Edward Ciroli of Ridgway and Clare Tootie (Jefferson) Ciroli of Sheffield.
