Free test protects private drinking water

The Headwaters Resource & Conservation Development Council based out of DuBois is still accepting applications from Elk County residents to receive free private drinking water supply tests.
The Headwaters Quality Drinking Water Project is designed to provide low income families in Jefferson, Elk, Potter, Cameron, Clinton, Centre and McKean Counties with funding to secure chain of custody water sample analyses of their private water supplies prior to Marcellus Shale gas drilling activities.

Area residents recall memories of Christmases past

Author Laura Ingalls Wilder is often credited with remarking that "our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmas-time."
Christmas can be a particularly special time for children, and they often make memories that they carry with them throughout the rest of their lives. Several current and former residents of Elk County recently shared with The Daily Press some of their fondest Christmas memories from their childhood.

Christine I. “Dena” Dahms

Christine I. “Dena” Dahms, 92, of 266 Grove Ave., Ridgway, died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011, at her residence.
She was born Dec. 17, 1919, in Ridgway, the daughter of the late Andrew J. and Margaret Forester Steger. She married John A. “Jack” Dahms on Feb. 14, 1943; he predeceased her on Aug. 19, 2005.
Mrs. Dahms was a lifelong Ridgway resident. She was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening , reading, and staying abreast of current events and changes in the nursing profession. She was a Registered Nurse at Elk County General Hospital and Ridgway Community Nurses.

Frank W. Sekelsky

Frank W. Sekelsky, 91, of 14 Kane St., Wilcox, died Friday afternoon, Dec. 23, 2011 at Pinecrest Manor in St. Marys following a lengthy illness.
He was born on Feb. 28, 1920, in Johnsonburg, son of the late John and Katherine Knopic Sekelsky. He married Wanda Waskiewicz on Sept. 30, 1944 in Holy Cross Church, Rasselas. She survives.

Rams wrestling falls to Smethport

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Rams won four of seven head-to-head matches Thursday night against Smethport as the visiting Hubbers took the dual meet win, 60-24.
Smethport was fueled by seven forfeit victories and three wins by falls.
The Rams however garnered some attention Thursday as they won four of the seven matches on the mat, all by fall.
"We looked very aggressive when we came out, very intense," said Johnsonburg head wrestling coach Mike Votano.

Salvation Army recently received grant to support heat assistance program

The Women Who Care, a project of the Elk County Community Foundation recently awarded a grant to the Salvation Army in Ridgway for $3,000. This marks the second year the Salvation Army has received support from The Women Who Care.
“This year we were awarded $3,000 to serve our energy assistance program,” said Captain Scott Harvey of the Salvation Army. “Last year they gave us a grant for our King's Table program.”
The Salvation Army approached the Women Who Care because of their support in the past.

Drilling operator works with Conservation District to correct violations

Elk County Conservation District Manager Steve Putt reported on his visit to the Silver Creek site after the Hunt Marcellus Operating Company spilled a large amount of bentonite into the stream, quickly making its way into a reservoir controlled by the Johnsonburg Municipal Authority.
Bentonite is a form of impure clay that easily absorbs water and is used to facilitate gas drilling.

Holland bringing hope to patients at Hahne Cancer Center

Stevie Wonder once said, "We all have ability. The difference is how we use it."
Though only an eighth grader at the St. Marys Area Middle School, Kersey resident Nicole Holland is currently using her abilities to make a big difference in the lives of patients at the Hahne Regional Cancer Center, a division of DuBois Regional Medical Center located in DuBois.
Holland, through her role as reigning Elk County Fair junior queen, recently undertook efforts to raise money to assemble "Hahne hope bags" for cancer patients.

Johnsonburg man arrested for sexual abuse of children charges

JOHNSONBURG – Police arrested Robert Fitzgerald, 56, of 305 Spruce Street, Johnsonburg, on charges of sexual abuse of children, dissemination of and possession of child pornography, criminal use of a communication facility, obscene and sexual material, identity theft, invasion of privacy, tampering with evidence, and harassment on Dec. 21 at 2:30 p.m. According to reports, police were called to a residence in the borough Dec.

Elkers down Port Allegany 61-38 to remain unbeaten

Ridgway gradually pulled away with the help of small spurts throughout the game as the Elkers remained undefeated with a 61-38 victory over Port Allegany in boys basketball action Wednesday night at Ridgway Area High School.
The Gators (1-2) held with the Elkers (4-0) through the early section of the first quarter as the game was even at 9-all. Ridgway closed the opening quarter on a 6-0 run as a Tony Leithner basket was sandwiched in between two hoops from Eric Matheson.
