JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Area School District exceeded the PSAA exam targeted test results for the 2010-2011 school year.
Each spring the school district is required by the state to give the exams to students in grades 3-8 and 11.

NRA high power events kick off at Ridgway Rifle Club

The NRA National Silhouette Championships continued with the high power events beginning Thursday at the Ridgway Rifle Club high power range.
In high power standard rifle, Angelica Kuess Davila (Laredo, Texas) was the match winner with a score of 33. Fred Kielbowick (Ridgway) was second overall with a 33 and Enrique Kuess Jr. (Laredo, Texas) was third with a 33.

High power hunting rifle begins 3-day event at Rifle Club

The high power hunting rifle competition began Thursday at the high power range of the Ridgway Rifle Club as part of the NRA National Silhouette Championships held all this week at the club.
Mark Pharr (Round Rock, Texas) was Thursday's match winner in hunting rifle with a score of 34. William Zander (Houston, Texas) was second at 31 and Luke Johnson (Marysville) was third in the open category with a 30.

Elk County Fair continues

Members of April School of Dance performed to a sizable crowd Wednesday night at the George A. Swanson Memorial Stage at the Elk County Fairgrounds. The Fair continues today with the Compact Car & Truck Demolition Derby at the Al Dietz Memorial Track at 7 p.m. That event will be complemented by the talent show at the George A. Swanson Memorial Stage at 7 p.m. Other fun events in the evening include the watermelon eating contest at the Starr Pavilion, the Hershey contest in Exhibit Hall No. 1 at 7 p.m., the best Jell-O dessert contest at 8 p.m. in Exhibit Hall No.

Supervisors put trailer up for bid

BROCKPORT – The Horton Township Supervisors voted unanimously in favor of putting a trailer up for bid during Wednesday night's regular meeting.
"When we bought that paver it came with a trailer," said supervisor Dennis Thompson. "We actually don't need it, so we are going to try and put it up for bid."
The trailer will be put out for bid with a minimum bid of $2,000.
"We are going to put it up for bid because we don't need a second trailer," said chairman Jeff Johnson.

Jo Ann K. Marche, 74, of 392 Brandy Camp Circle Ridgway died on Aug. 5, 2011 at Elk Haven Nursing Home in St. Marys.
She was born on March 18, 1937 in Dagus Mines, daughter of the late Adam and Sophie Zuchowski Shutika.
She married James A. Marche Sr., who died on July 6, 2008.
She was a member of Holy Cross Church in Brandy Camp and enjoyed crocheting, collecting angels and atching Mother Angelica on EWTN.
She had been employed at Stackpole Carbon as a laborer in the oven room for 18 years. After her retirement, she worked at Long John Silvers in DuBois and Sylvania in St. Marys.

Peggy J. (Bugdon) Hankinson

Peggy J. (Bugdon) Hankinson, 78, DuBois, died in her sleep on Aug. 2, 2011.
She was born Dec. 4, 1932, in Portland Mills, the daughter of Ignacious and Mary Gere Bugdon. She lived and worked in the Ridgway area for many years. On Oct. 6, 1980, she married Woody Hankinson and moved to the Wilcox area. After her husband’s death, she lived in several locations, finally residing in DuBois.

Elk County Fair kicks off

The 2011 Elk County Fair kicked off Tuesday evening with the Opening Ceremonies which were attended by State Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Elk/Clearfield), Elk County Commissioners, various township supervisors and fair board personnel and volunteers. Next was the crowning of the Elk County Fair queen, junior queen and princess. This year there were 10 princess candidates, 15 junior queen candidates and five queen candidates.

School district approves MOU for blended schools

The Ridgway Area School District approved a memorandum of understanding [MOU] for the Ridgway Virtual Academy during their regular school board meeting last night.
Superintendent Dr. Michael O'Brien took the time to explain the importance of blended schools in the district.
