Elvira "Ellie" Ann Watson, 79, died suddenly on Sunday, June 24, 2012 at the Pocono Medical Center, Stroudsburg. Born in Ridgway, daughter of Claude and Carrie Hostetlar Agens, she was the loving wife of Everett "Spot" Watson for 55 years. She was a member and past chaplain of the Eagles Club-Aerie "588."
ST. MARYS â State Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk) will be holding a ceremony to recognize Vietnam War-era veterans in his legislative district and is asking area residents who served during that time to contact his office.
The Ridgway minor league all-stars once again had the game in doubt until the final pitch.
Once again, Ridgway survived a final-inning rally victorious.
A third straight close call gave the Ridgway 9- and 10-year-olds the D-10 North Division title and a chance to play for the D-10 title outright with a 13-12 victory over Bradford Tuesday night at the Ridgway Little League fields along Grant Road.
DAGUS MINES âÂ The Fox Township Post 511 American Legion baseball team gave the undefeated Wilcox squad a run for their money early on in Monday evening's match-up in Fox Township, but Wilcox's bats finally came alive late in the game and the team used good defense to hand Fox a 10-2 loss to end their regular season.
Wilcox manager Jeff Peterson indicated that Fox's slower pitching initially threw off his batters, remarking that they need "to adjust a lot faster" than they did.
Ray L. Blauser, 79, of 647 S. St. Marys Road, St. Marys, and formerly of Shefï¬eld, died on Sunday, July 1, 2012 at DuBois Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
He was born June 19, 1933 in Mayburg, a son of the late Perry and Bernetta Hanley Blauser.
Â Ray was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean War from 1952-1953.Â He retired from Motion Control after many years of service.Â He was a member of the Ridgway VFW and enjoyed hunting and ï¬shing.
Patricia L. "Pat" Jacobs, 77, of 504 High St., Johnsonburg, died Sunday, July 1, 2012 at her residence following a lengthy illness.
She was born on Jan. 28, 1935 in Kane, daughter of the late Lloyd and Bertha Fox Swedenjelm.
On Sept. 4, 1954 in Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg, she married Richard H. "Rich" Jacobs, and he survives.
She resided in Johnsonburg since 1969. She was a 1952 graduate of Kane High School. She was employed by Lyn-Clare Flower Shop in Johnsonburg for 10 years and Blue Cross/Blue Shield in Baltimore, Md. for two years.
JOHNSONBURG â Area residents are now shaken to the core after the vacant St. Joe's Club in Johnsonburg went up in flames early Monday morning.
The fire, ruled an arson, is the second mysterious fire in four days in Johnsonburg and reportedly broke out shortly after midnight on Monday. Reports indicate the fire started on a second-floor wooden porch and quickly spread throughout the building.
ST. MARYS â Due to the high cost of purchasing a pre-engineered public restroom facility from Oregon, the Elk County Conservation District is pursuing other alternatives for the West Creek Wetland Learning Center.
"I have met with the [Elk County] commissioners and the planning commission a few times over the past few weeks to discuss the project," said District Manager Steve Putt. "We have kind of decided to take a step back."
Bonnie M. Keneske, 56, of 3374 Long Level Rd., Johnsonburg, died Saturday afternoon, June 30, 2012, at her residence following a short illness.
She was born Nov. 7, 1955 in Bradford, daughter of the late Harold H. and Shirley VanTassel Hunt.
On July 16, 1977 in Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg, she married Joseph R. Keneske, and he survives.
She resided in Johnsonburg since 1978.
She graduated from Gowanda High School, Gowanda, N.Y., in 1975 and attended BOCES for a degree in nursing.
She was a member of Holy Rosary Church and the Rolfe Sportsmen's Club.
The St. Marys Little League Baseball Major League all-stars stayed alive in the District 10 South Division Tournament with a 15-1, four-inning victory over the Ridgway All-Stars Saturday afternoon at Memorial Park.
St. Marys will travel to Fox Township this evening for a 6 p.m. game against the Fox Township squad. Fox defeated Brockway by a 7-5 score on Saturday.
