ST. MARYS - People who pass the PA Wilds signs along the road may think that the designation is just that--the name given to our part of the state. If they were to visit the workshop held at the Red Fern in St. Marys last Thursday and Friday, they would find that there are groups within our area that are working to explore significant issues facing our communities.
Mary H. Marroni, 87, of Wexford House, Kingsport, Tenn., and formerly of St. Marys, Johnsonburg and Ridgway, died Monday morning, Nov. 12, 2012 at Wexford House in Kingsport, Tenn. following a lengthy illness.
She was born on Nov. 1, 1925 in Ridgway, the daughter of the late Joseph P. and Eleanor Rosaria Tegano. On June 9, 1943, she married Earnest J. Marroni, who preceded her in death on Oct. 4, 1965.
Ridgway boys golf head coach Dave Zawatski recently recapped the team's season at Ridgway's annual banquet.
Ridgway had a number of accomplishments this season. The team was 13-1, won the AML [Allegheny Mountain League] championship and won the Elk County Golf Tournament for the first time.
An early Saturday afternoon fire damaged an Allegheny Coatings facility site along River Road in Ridgway.
The fire reportedly originated at 12:08 p.m. when an employee at ARC Metals, a neighboring industrial facility, observed heavy smoke coming from the Allegheny Coatings building.
The site, a 48-foot by 180-foot steel frame industrial building, is a secondary location and was positioned across the street from the main Allegheny Coatings facility.
NANSEN â€“ No one was injured Friday morning when a fire destroyed the cab of a tanker truck on Route 66 near Nansen in Highland Township.
The tanker was loaded with 4,500 gallons of liquid wax, according to Bill Edinger, chief of the Highland Township Volunteer Fire Department.
He said the incident â€ścould have been a lot worseâ€ť if the fire had spread to the tanker.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ The Johnsonburg Area School District Board of Directors approved a resolution to not raise taxes above the PDE index rate for the 2013-2014 school year during Thursday night's regular meeting.
Local dignitaries, veterans and county officials gathered Thursday morning at Ridgway Area High School for a special Veterans Day program.
Ralph Tettis, chief of the Ridgway Police Department, was emcee for the assembly and introduced various borough and county officials, in addition to state Representative Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk), and a large number of veterans and members of local servicemen burial detail groups.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ The Johnsonburg Area School District held their annual Veterans Day program in the high school auditorium Thursday morning.
Four Elk County residents pleaded guilty in Elk County Court Monday to drug offenses related to the operation of a Jefferson County-based drug trafficking ring.
BELLEFONTE â€“ A last-minute stay of execution was awarded Thursday evening in a case involving the 1993 murder of a teenage girl following defense attorneys' appeals in federal court.
