Jeanette D. Hughes, 73, of Cuba, N.Y. passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012 at home.
Born on March 17, 1939 in Lackawanna, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Bruce and Mary Kelsey Colley. On Sept. 5, 1959, in St. Jude's Episcopal Church, South Buffalo, N.Y., she married Arthur G. Hughes who passed away Nov. 18, 2009.
Jeanette was a graduate of Frontier High School Class of 1956. Mrs. Hughes worked a short time for Bethlehem Steel in Buffalo but most was a happy homemaker and loving wife for her family.
DuBOIS â€“Â The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader doubles duo of Laira Reuscher and Sophie Herzing, both seniors, defeated their cross-town rivals of Aubrey Wiesner and Chelsea Agosti from St. Marys Area 6-2, 6-1 to claim the District 9 Class AA doubles title on Tuesday afternoon at DuBois Area High School.
Tough scoring conditions met both Ridgway and Elk County Catholic but the Elkers were able to defeat the Crusaders 212-220 in action Tuesday afternoon at Laurel Mill Golf Course.
Josh Roselli of Ridgway was the medalist for the day with his score of 36.
â€śThe scores were high for the two top teams in District 9 as Laurel Mill Golf Course played tough,â€ť Ridgway coach Dave Zawatski said. â€śGive Josh Roselli credit for being that guy that we have been searching for and going low to make the difference.â€ť
JOHNSONBURG â€“ The Johnsonburg Borough Council declared the residence at 208 Church St. in Johnsonburg a public nuisance during Monday afternoon's regular meeting.
On Aug. 22, a fire at the residence destroyed a single-stall garage, four residential structures and a vehicle. The residence of 208 Church St., owned by Albert Lee Abplanalp, sustained the most damage, as the fire originated in a detached single-stall garage at the property and spread to the main residence situated several feet away.
Muriel J. Browne of Binghamton, N.Y., died Friday, Oct. 5, 2012 on her 96th birthday at the Good Shepherd-Fairview Nursing Facility.
She was born Oct. 5, 1916 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of the late Julia and Frederick Grandage. She was predeceased by her husband of 35 years, the Rev. Vincent Browne, rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Ridgway from 1952 until his death in 1997; a sister, Florence Kellett of Toronto; and brother, Frank Grandage, also of Toronto.
Helen Louise Shafer, 79, of 3033 Dagus Hill St., Daguscahonda, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012, at DuBois Regional Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 16, 1932, in Oakland, Md., the daughter of the late Charles R. and Margaret Hardesty Jordan. She married Joseph X. Shafer, who predeceased her on Jan. 23, 2002.
Mrs. Shafer was a member of the Faith United Church of Christ. She retired from Quality Components. She enjoyed reading, knitting and crocheting.
Employees and volunteers at the Ridgway Public Library are hoping to collect one million pennies as part of a fundraiser designated specifically for a new floor on the first floor of the library and a new porch.
The old tile floor area on the first floor will be redone as well as the wood on the porch outside.
According to Lann Yurchick, the library's director, it has been at least 15 years since the porch was redone.
The Ridgway Area Community United Fund may have kicked off its final campaign unless a member of the community volunteers as a chairperson.
The community fund has always been housed at the Ridgway-Elk County Chamber of Commerce with a chairperson recognized within the community.
Michael R. DeVallance, 41, of 1245 13th St., N.W., Washington, D.C., died Saturday morning, Oct. 6, 2012 at his residence following a short illness.
He was born on Feb. 13, 1971 in Ridgway, son of Robert N. and Joyce Marrone DeVallance of Johnsonburg, who survive.
He resided in the Washington, D.C. area since 1997. He graduated from Johnsonburg Area High School in 1989 and from Clarion University of Pennsylvania in 1995.
RIDGWAY â€” Ridgway cross country hosted the annual Ridgway Invitational Saturday morning at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
A new meet record was shattered in the girls varsity race as Regan Rome of Dallas finished with a time of 18:15, breaking the old record of 19:03 which was set by Dani Kocjancic of Kane in 2008. Kennedy Weisner of Elk County Catholic also would have broken the old meet record with her runner-up finish at 18:41.
Adair Gennocro of St. Marys was third at 19:04 and Victoria Dippold took fourth for ECC with a time of 19:37.
