Gathering kicks off Holiday season

JOHNSONBURG – To kick off the holiday season, the Johnsonburg Recreation Board is sponsoring a Santa Gathering to welcome Santa on Sunday, Nov. 20 at the Johnsonburg Community Center.
The event will be held from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. There will be music performed by Bells of St. Marys and the Grey Knight Drum and Bugle Corp. Games, activities, crafts and face-painting will be provided for the children. A soup, bake sale and Chinese auction will be conducted and proceeds benefit the Johnsonburg Community Center.

PA Wilds juried artist new to area

Stacie Johnson-Leske, a ceramics artist, recently relocated to the area with her husband because she was intrigued by the Pennsylvania Wilds.
“My husband and I like to do outdoorsy things for our anniversary every year,” said Johnson-Leske. “We researched the PA Wilds and found that Ridgway had both bicycle trails and kayaking. So we stayed at a bed and breakfast in St. Marys and visited Ridgway.”
Able to create her art anywhere, Johnson-Leske had made the transition to Ridgway.

Ridgway volleyball celebrates record-breaking season

The Ridgway Lady Elker volleyball team celebrated its 2011 season with a banquet Thursday night at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
Varsity head coach Janet Redmond welcomed everyone and expressed appreciation to the coaching staff which consists of Kayleen Ford, Chris Woodford and Dan Healy, a newcomer to the staff this season. She also recognized the booster club with the members being Woodford, Mike and Carol Ames and Keith and Debbie Oknefski along with parents who helped at the concession stand.

Reminiscing Ramettes recollect banner season

JOHNSONBURG – Teammates, family, friends and coaches gathered Thursday for a banquet to close out the Johnsonburg Ramettes' 2011 volleyball season.
"When we started the season, I really wasn't sure how we were going to end up," said Johnsonburg head girls varsity volleyball coach Bill Shuey said. "I didn't know what our record would be and after the Union tournament and a slow start, we did end up playing some volleyball later in the day and we actually took second to Elk County Catholic."

Events at PSU put focus on preventing child sexual assault

Following the recent allegations that former Penn State assistant football coach Gerald A. “Jerry” Sandusky allegedly sexually abused at least eight young boys over a 15-year period, one statement has been repeated frequently: The focus should remain on helping the victims of this alleged abuse.
The debacle has left people wondering many things, not the least of which is: If something like this could happen at a large institution like Penn State and stay under the radar, how many other places could it be happening and go unnoticed?

DEP responds to boring incident

JOHNSONBURG – The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and the Department of Environmental Protection [DEP] responded to a site along Silver Creek, half of a mile from the reservoir Thursday morning, 48 hours after the Hunt Marcellus Operating Company reportedly leaked a large amount of bentonite into the stream, quickly making its way into the reservoir.
DEP spokesman Kevin Sunday reported an increased amount of sediment in the reservoir and a temporary spike in the turbidity following the incident.
Sunday said there was not an impact on the quality of the drinking water.

Recent rise in area foreclosures

While Elk County may have weathered the housing crisis better than other parts of the country, some local realtors say the area is experiencing an emerging nationwide trend which has seen foreclosure rates climbing steeply, in the double digits, in just a matter of months.
According to Fitch, a global rating agency, national foreclosure rates have jumped 14 percent between the second and third quarter of 2011.

Richard L. Polesky, 81, 797 Dill Hill Rd., Johnsonburg, died early Thursday morning, Nov. 17, 2011, at UPMC Hamot Medical Center in Erie following a lengthy illness.
He was born on Nov. 25, 1929 in Elizabeth, N.J., son of Michael and Rose Fragale Poleski.
On Aug. 20, 1955 in Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg he married Norma R. Shannon and she preceded him in death on Sept. 2, 2005.
Formerly of New Jersey, he resided in Johnsonburg since 1973.

Lisa M. Maholtz

November 17, 2011

Lisa M. Maholtz, 51, of Early Avenue, Ridgway, died Tuesday, Nov. 1 at home after a short illness.
Funeral services for Lisa M. Maholtz will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011 at the Johnsonburg United Methodist Church, with Pastor Jay Tennies officiating.

A memorial service for Kenneth W. Parks, 97, who died Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, will be conducted on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 10:30 a.m. at the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home, 401 Chestnut St., Johnsonburg. There will be a James W. Brown Lodge #675 F&AM service and military honors accorded by the Johnsonburg-Wilcox Servicemen's Detail following the memorial service.
It was mistakenly reported in another publication that the service had taken place on Saturday, Nov. 12.
