Elk Catholic’s Ben Wortman wins 9-AA singles crown

DuBOIS - Elk County Catholic’s Ben Wortman captured the District 9-AA Singles Tennis Championship Thursday. Wortman defeated Johnsonburg’s John Paul Allegretto 6-1, 6-0 in the championship match.
The tournament was held at the DuBois Area High School courts.
Wortman reached the finals by defeating Brockway’s Fabio Fortunato in the semifinals by a 6-2, 6-1 score. In the quarterfinals, Wortman defeated Johnsonburg’s Mason Martonik, 10-0.

Horton Township eyes fall cleaup

BROCKPORT – Following the Spring Cleanup, the Horton Township Supervisors voted in favor of reinstating a Fall Cleanup to be held Sept. 1.
Chairman Jeff Johnson said the cleanup will be held in the fall on a trial basis.
"We did get some stuff; not an overwhelming amount," Johnson said. "What we are going to try to do now is have one in the fall now to see how it goes."
According to Johnson, the township had held a cleanup twice a year.

Josephine K. Sorge, age 94, formerly of 101 North Mill St., died Wednesday afternoon, May 9, 2012, at Pinecrest Manor, where she had been a resident for the past three months.

T. Scott Cuthbert of Roswell, Ga., age 66, passed away on April 23, 2012, after a brief illness. He is predeceased by his parents Talbot Cuthbert of Ridgway and JoAnne McAllister Consolo of Castro Valley, Calif.
He is survived by his wife Jackie and his daughter Laura J. Cuthbert of Hermosa Beach, Calif.
Scott was a graduate of Ridgway High School and the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. His memberships include Rotary Club of North Fulton, the VFW, Crow Canyon Masonic Lodge, and the Northminster Presbyterian Church of Roswell, Ga.

Rams continue streak with 11-0 romp over Tide

JOHNSONBURG – A steady drizzle throughout the early innings did not put a damper on the Rams' undefeated trek as Johnsonburg earned an 11-0 5-inning win Wednesday afternoon at Knothole Area Recreational Park against Curwensville.
Johnsonburg sophomore Cole Peterson was on the hill early and combined with junior CJ Herbstritt for a 2-hit shutout against the struggling Golden Tide as the Rams stretched their undefeated mark to 15-0.
The home team's bats went to work early on as Curwensville starting pitcher Boone McGary was ousted after recording only one out in the game.

Elkers lose in rain-shortened game

Mother Nature threw DuBois Central Catholic and Ridgway a curveball and altered some team strategies.
The Cardinals were the team that best adjusted.
DuBois Central Catholic took advantage after a 53-minute rain delay with a 5-run fourth inning in a 5-0, 5-inning rain-shortened game at Sandy Beach Recreational Park.

Crusader tennis defeats St. Marys 4-1 for D9 team title

DuBOIS – The Elk County Catholic Crusader tennis squad defeated the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen 4-1 at the DuBois Area High School tennis courts to claim the 2012 District 9 AA Boys' Tennis Team Championship on Wednesday afternoon in a match played under threatening skies that ultimately transitioned to a light drizzle just as the final match was finishing up.

George G. Pearson Jr.

George G. Pearson Jr., 85, Johnstown, died May 7, 2012.
Born Aug. 1, 1926, in Ridgway, son of George G. Pearson Sr. and Zepha (Eisenhuth) Pearson, he resided in Ridgway until 1959.
He married Pearl A. (Yonker) at St. Benedict’s Church in Daguscahonda on May 24, 1948 as death ended a marriage union of almost 64 years.

School board approves preliminary budget

The Ridgway Area School District Board of Directors approved a preliminary budget during Tuesday night's regular meeting, which will not include a tax increase for the 2012-2013 fiscal year.
The board voted unanimously in favor of approving the preliminary budget with revenues and expenditures of $11,840,091.
According to Finance Manager Brent Rhoads, one of the first changes to the budget included the elimination of a .8 tax mill increase.

Ruby Gibbs

Ruby Gibbs, 95, passed away in the afternoon of Wednesday, May 2 at Glens Falls Hospital in Glens Falls, N.Y.
Ruby was born March 14, 1917 in Ridgway, the daughter of the late Lee and Anne Bowers Gier.
Ruby was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Robert Gibbs, on July 15, 1993, and her siblings, Cecile Johnson, Grace Cyone, Pearl Plaster, Amos Gier, Aloysius Gier and Virginia Stauffer.
Ruby and Bob were former owners of Rest-A-Y-L Restaurant and Bar in Newcomb, N.Y.
