CAPSEA involved at FSG Elementary

Tracy Ross, Community Outreach Training Coordinator for the Citizens Against Physical, Sexual and Emotional Abuse is involved at the Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School with the fifth grade classes teaching tolerance and conflict resolution in the Diversity/Tolerance Program.
The program focuses on teaching the children to respond confidently and with success.

No change in Johnsonburg taxes

JOHNSONBURG – Residents in the Borough of Johnsonburg will not see an increase in taxes after council members voted in favor of fixing the tax rates to remain the same from last year.
The real estate tax will remain at 21.36 mills and the occupation tax will remain at 237.5 mills.
The 2012 budget was adopted at $1,801,811 during Monday afternoon's regular borough council meeting.
Other taxes include a one-half of one percent earned income tax, a local services tax of $47; a $5 per capita tax and a one-half of one percent realty transfer tax.

Jones Township avoids tax hike

WILCOX – The Jones Township Supervisors adopted the 2012 budget during the regular meeting Monday night.
Supervisor Laurie Storrar reported a general fund budget of about $650,000 without a tax increase for the upcoming year.
The real estate tax will remain at 6.6 mills and the occupation tax will remain at 14 mills.
Supervisors discussed a joint meeting that was held with Al Vanderpoel of E&M Engineers and Thomas Wagner of Meyer & Wagner, on Dec. 8 concerning the seven Elk County Municipalities that need to address the Federal Emergency Management Agency's [FEMA] Plan B Ordinance.

Rendezvous site hot topic in Ridgway

Plans to shut down Main Street for the Ridgway Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous were quickly stifled by PennDOT officials as borough council and event organizers struggle to settle on an agreeable locale.
After the initial plans for Main Street were halted, talks of returning the event to the Ridgway Firemen's Carnival Lot along North Broad Street were shot down as borough officials have reportedly been entertaining thoughts of holding the event on Court and Center Streets in down Ridgway.

Officials weigh option for source water protection plan

After the New Year, the Johnsonburg Municipal Authority and the Borough of Ridgway will discuss connecting their water supply systems together to use one source as backup in the event of an emergency.
Ridgway Borough's environmental manager Paul McCurdy attended Tuesday night's Johnsonburg Municipal Authority meeting to discuss the concept.

Nancy R. Beimel, 70, of 759 Johnsonburg Rd. Elco Glen, St. Marys, died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center following a lengthy illness of the past several months.
She was born in Los Angeles, CA on March 11, 1941, daughter of the late Frank and Helen Johnson Nottingham.
She had formerly lived in California and Reynoldsville.
Nancy enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren. She was an animal lover and loved her dog. She loved to travel, do ceramics, read and write poetry.

Dominick (Nick) Sette

Dominick (Nick) Sette, 78, of 178 Evers Ave. St. Marys, died Friday Dec. 9, 2011 at his residence following a brief illness.
He was born December 16, 1932 in Ridgway, son of the late Frank and Concettina Curado Sette.
On May 4, 1957, in the Sacred Heart Church, he married Beverly Klancer, who survives.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Ridgway schools. He was a retired employee of the Stackpole Carbon Company and Carbone, retiring in 1997 after 40 years of service.

Rams take care of St. Marys

JOHNSONBURG – The Rams (1-0) jumped out to an insurmountable 20-point lead Friday night in a lights-out 60-35 win Friday night in their home opener over county rival St. Marys (0-1).
Johnsonburg had three players in double figures as sophomore guard Cameron Grumley paced all scorers with 17 points; he was complemented by junior forward Quinn Luhr, who chipped in 14, and junior guard Mitchell Holmberg, who tallied 10 points on the night.

Ramettes edge Lady Dutch in season opener

ST. MARYS – The Johnsonburg Ramettes handed the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team a 41-35 non-league loss last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven in the opening game of the 2011-12 season for both squads.
This was the first game in four years that the Lady Dutch have played without the school’s all-time scorer, Kayla Hoohuli, now a member of the Canisius College Golden Griffs basketball team.
Last night’s game was a close contest for 32 minutes as neither team was able to get a run. The Ramettes led 11-10 after one period, 20-18 at the half and 28-27 at the end of three quarters.
