Event to benefit Ridgway YMCA

Members of the Ridgway Elks Lodge No. 872 are organizing a steak fry event to benefit the Ridgway YMCA.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 1 from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. For $15 apiece, each patron will receive one 12 oz. to 14 oz. Delmonico steak, baked potato, vegetable, salad, roll, and dessert. The food will be sold from 5-9 p.m. with the band King Thaddeus performing from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
According to J.R. Geitner, general manager at the lodge, there will be a maximum of 200 tickets sold. They are available at the YMCA, the lodge, and the Welcome Center in Ridgway.

Voters to assess tax increase

Following the Ridgway Area School District Board of Directors' approval to place a referendum question on the ballot of the November general election opting to increase the earned income tax in order to eliminate the occupation assessment, many taxpayers are asking themselves which way to vote.
On Tuesday, Aug. 7, the board approved a referendum designed to repeal its existing occupation tax and replace the lost revenue by increasing the existing earned income tax by .4 percent.

Charles Street home damaged by fire

ST. MARYS – Members of the Crystal Fire Department were called out Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. for a reported structure fire at 330 Charles St.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the first floor fully involved in fire. Firefighters established a water supply and knocked the fire down. They spent a considerable amount of time working on hot spots.
There was heavy fire, heat and smoke damage to the first floor, moderate heat and smoke damage to the second floor and moderate smoke damage to the basement.
There were no injuries.
The cause of the fire was attributed to unattended cooking.

Marshall E. Wilson

August 16, 2012

Marshall E. Wilson, 81, of 78 Springbrook Dr., Ridgway died Thursday morning at Elk Regional Health Center following a lengthy illness. He was born March 9, 1931 in Ridgway, son of the late Benton C. and Margaret B. (Evans) Wilson. He married Maude Helen Salberg on March 17, 1956, she preceded him in death on March 9, 2011.

Agnes Dickant Rafaloski

Agnes Dickant Rafaloski, 88, of Pittsburgh, died Thursday morning, Aug. 16, 2012 in the trauma center at Allegheny General Hospital after battling traumatic injuries sustained in a car accident that occurred four weeks ago.
She is the daughter of the late John and Susan Dickant.

Robert M. Johnson

August 16, 2012

Robert M. Johnson, 85, of 258 Horner Rd., Wilcox, died Wednesday evening, Aug. 15, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys following a short illness.
He was born April 6, 1927 in Kane, son of the late Irving and Florence Anderson Johnson.
On July 3, 1952 he married Iva Joanne Smith, and she preceded him in death on December 27, 2003. He resided in Wilcox all his life and attended Wilcox High School. He enlisted in the Navy and received his GED later in life.

Ridgway boys golf wins season opener over Brockway

Ridgway golf won its season opener 202-230 over Brockway Thursday at Laurel Mill Golf Course.
Mitchell Stark of Ridgway was the medalist with a score of 38. Mitchell Gilmore was one stroke behind after carding a 39.
"It was nice to get the first match out of the way," Ridgway coach Dave Zawatski said. "I can't say enough about the way freshman Mitchell Stark and Mitchell Gilmore played."  
Josh Roselli finished with a 40 and Josh Mitchell ended up with a 42. Jesse Reynolds, Matt Aiello and Jake Klawuhn each carded a 43 as Ridgway's fifth-best score. T.J. Schlimm finished with a 44.

ECC golfers first, St. Marys second in St. Marys-DuBois Challenge

The Elk County Catholic High School and St. Marys Area High School golf teams both opened their seasons on Thursday afternoon, competing in the annual St. Marys-DuBois Challenge at Bavarian Hills Golf Course.
ECC finished in first place in the four-school event with 23 points. St. Marys was second with 16 points. DuBois Central Catholic was third with 14 points, and DuBois Area High School was fourth with 7 points. Six golfers from each school participated in the 18-hole contest.

Milliard waived to court on arson charges

JOHNSONBURG - A Ridgway man, part of the farther-and-son team charged with arsons committed in Johnsonburg and Ridgway in 2008 and 2012, respectively, was waived to court Wednesday on charges relating to the former.
Anthony Karl Milliard, 28, of Ridgway, was waived to court Wednesday before District Judge George "Tony" King on charges relating to a Dec. 4, 2008 arson at 115 First Ave. in Johnsonburg, a property belonging to his father, Francis Anthony Milliard, 54, of Ridgway.

JASD meets PSSA goals

JOHNSONBURG – Students of the Johnsonburg Area School District have met PSSA [Pennsylvania School System of Assessment] standards for Adequate Yearly Progress [AYP] for the 2011-2012 school year.
Elementary school principal Jennifer Hobbs presented the students' scores during the August board of directors meeting.
In math, elementary students in grades 3 through 6 scored an 86.4 percent proficiency out of a targeted 78 percent.
