The Elk County Commissioners started 2012 yesterday morning with several reorganizational meetings to begin the calendar year.
Elk County Commissioner Daniel R. Freeburg, who took over as chairperson a month ago, will continue until April 30, 2013, completing a 16-month term as chair. Freeburg will be followed by fellow commissioner June H. Sorg from May 1, 2013 to Aug. 31, 2014; incoming commissioner Janis E. Kemmer will serve as chairperson from Sept. 1, 2014 to Dec. 31, 2015.
Applications are still being accepted for drinking water sampling.
The Ridgway Borough Council held a reorganizational meeting Tuesday to deliver the Oath of Office to incoming council members.
Nina Stolburg was elected as council president in a 4-3 decision over former president J.R. Geitner.
Council member Ralph Dussia nominated Geitner to continue his role as president and was seconded by Frank Quattrone.
Council member Heather Mader nominated Stolburg to take over Geitner's seat.
BRADY TWP. â€“Â A 93-year-old DuBois man was killed Tuesday afternoon when he lost control of his vehicle on a snow-covered roadway in Brady Township.
According to reports, Raymond G. Young, age 93, of DuBois, was pronounced dead at the scene Tuesday along Oklahoma Salem Road in Brady Township.
BROCKPORT â€“ Horton Township Supervisor Jeff Johnson was reelected as chairman during Tuesday night's reorganizational meeting.
Newly-elected supervisor Levi P. Donahue was appointed as vice chairman. Donahue replaced outgoing supervisor Jack Carlson, who did not seek reelection.
Dennis Thompson was appointed as permanent secretary and treasurer.
Supervisors voted in favor of raising township employees' hourly wages by 25 cents.
David Pontzer was reappointed as solicitor.
The regular monthly meeting will continue to take place on the second Wednesday of the Month at 6 p.m.
WASHINGTON TWP. â€“ The eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 near Falls Creek were reopened about 11 p.m. Monday evening following a pileup involving at least 15 vehicles and injuring 17 people that occurred at about 2:30 p.m. Monday afternoon in snowy weather.
Several crash reports were issued by the DuBois-based Pa. State Police Tuesday as of press time, with more reports expected later in the week. Several people involved sustained serious injuries, but no fatalities have been reported in the crash in Washington Township, Jefferson County.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ Johnsonburg wrestling lost 38-24 to Coudersport in a dual meet held Tuesday night at Johnsonburg Area High School.
The Rams won four of the seven wrestled matches on the night as the Falcons used four forfeits to garner the overall dual win.
KERSEY â€“ The Guardian Angel Center, Helpmates Charitable Giving Foundation, Inc. has recently received a grant from the Women Who Care to start a new program.
â€śWe are working on starting a new disposable diapers program,â€ť said Clythera Hornung, volunteer and co-grant contact. â€śIt is a program that we have never done in the past, and it will be a nice benefit to our clients.â€ť

Walter R. Ditch, 94, of Ridgway passed away peacefully on Friday, Dec. 30, 2011 of cardiac arrhythmia and advanced age. Walter was the patriarch of his family and recently celebrated his birthday with five generations in attendance. He was born Nov. 24, 1917 in Ramsaytown, Jefferson Co., Pa.
His family relocated to Ridgway when he was about 10 and with the exception of several years during WWII, spent the remainder of his life in the home he built on the family farm along Boot Jack.

ST. MARYS â€“ Ridgway was spurred on by a 24-point performance from senior guard Eric Matheson as the Elkers won the Elk County Boys Holiday Basketball Tournament with a 45-38 victory over Johnsonburg Friday night at St. Marys Area High School.
