A recommendation to extend the public walking at the Elementary School until May 31 was made by Superintendent Dennis Crotzer.
â€śPeople come up and walk at the elementary school which usually ends at the end of April,â€ť Crotzer said. â€śI have been approached to extend it until the end of May.â€ť
Shane Launer, board member suggested to extend the public walking not only till the end of May, but during the entire school year. After a board discussion, the motion was approved to extend the public walking at the elementary school for days that school is in session.
Dawn E. Baker, 49, of 106 Abbot Rd., St. Marys, died Wednesday, March 4, 2012 at her residence following an illness of the past several months.
She was born July 29, 1962 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Robert and Marion Stewert Hoffman.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of Johnsonburg High School, Class of 1980. She was employed at MPP in St. Marys.
Eva M. Avery, age 99, formerly of 2678 Montmorenci Rd., Ridgway, died Wednesday evening, April 4, 2012, at Hartland of Mentor in Mentor, Ohio.
She was born Jan. 29, 1913, in Bells Landing, Clearfield County, daughter of the late J.J. and Della (Hoover) Ferringer. She married Leonard C. Avery on June 28, 1938, he preceded her in death on Dec. 11, 1981.
Noah R. DiNardo passed away suddenly at his residence in New Britain on Tuesday, April 3, 2012. He was 85.
Born in Johnsonburg, he was the son of the late Ralph and Serafina (Marrone) DiNardo. Noah was the loving husband of Mary Louise (Dattoli) DiNardo for 52 years and dedicated father of Paul DiNardo (Teresa) of Hillsborough, Calif. and Stephen DiNardo (Laura) of Plumsteadville. Also surviving are his siblings, Dominic A. DiNardo and Almerinda DiNardo Ewing and his beloved grandchildren Christopher, Alexander, Michael, Kristen, Justin and Katherine DiNardo.
At the Tuesday meeting of the Elk County Solid Waste Authority, Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator Bekki Titchner said representatives from the National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR) and the PA Recycling Markets Center will soon visit the county's community recycling center in regard to a pilot project to collect and recycle PET thermoform packaging. PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is a strong, food-safe plastic used to make many types of containers, including soft drink and water bottles.
Elk County Commissioners on Tuesday approved changes to Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) documentation during a board meeting.
The changes are from contracts dating back to fiscal year 2009.
According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated one in 88 children in the U.S. is currently living with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), marking a 23 percent increase since the last report was issued in 2009. The findings were released March 29, just days before Autism Awareness Month, a national observance since the 1970s, began in April.
The Ridgway Township Municipal Authority discussed water accountability concerns during their regular meeting Wednesday night.
Works Superintendent Carl Gosnell reported locating two water leaks in the service lines in the Boot Jack area.
"One was repaired by the customer as it was on their service line and the second was repaired by the Municipal Authority since it was between the main and the curb box," Gosnell said. "We are pretty confident the combination of those two leaks will take care of the unaccountable water we have had in the last couple months."
JOHNSONBURG â€“ After Cole Peterson's 2-hit shutout Monday complete with 14 strikeouts, the Johnsonburg Rams avoided a letdown Wednesday as Mitchell Holmberg and Quinn Luhr combined to 3-hit visiting Brockway in a 12-2 6-inning game.
"It was a good game for pitching and they both threw really well," said Johnsonburg head varsity baseball coach Jeff Peterson. "We threw a lot of strikes and that's what keeps us in the game because our defense is strong, I really like our defense."
Paul L. Schmiedel, 96, of Bisbee, Ariz., formerly of Momence, Ill. and Elmira, N.Y. passed from this life on March 30, 2012.
