Crusaders baseball defeats Kane Wolves, 13-7

The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team withstood a four-run first inning by the Kane Wolves Tuesday afternoon at Berwind Park as they rebounded for a 13-7 victory over the Wolves.
Kane jumped out to the 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Elk Catholic responded with three runs of their own in the home half of the inning. The Crusaders would score four in the second, five in the third and one in the fourth for a 13-4 lead. Kane scored two in the fifth and one in the seventh, making the final score 13-7.

Curwensville uses the long ball to drop Ramettes

JOHNSONBURG – Megan Barrett and Tiffany Carter both had a 5-RBI performance Tuesday as Curwensville defeated Johnsonburg, 17-1.
Curwensville's Tierra Shope scattered three hits in three innings of work, giving up one run while Taylor Goodman and Carter both hit home runs over the fence in the three-inning victory.
Curwensville put four runs up in the first inning to take the early advantage as the Lady Tide sent nine batters to the plate in the first and second innings, and another 14 batters in the third inning.

Fire destroys home in Lamont

LAMONT – Area fire departments were dispatched to a structure fire Monday afternoon at 3:07 p.m. at 2145 Old Lamont Rd. in Jones Township.
Kane responded with Engine 56 and 57 and Rescue truck 51.
Tim Wile, chief of the Kane Volunteer Fire Department, identified the owners as Alan and Sheryl Pence.

Survey: Water rates fall within average

During Monday night's regular Ridgway Borough Council meeting Environmental Manager Paul McCurdy reported that the water and sewer rates fall within the average for the state following the recent publishing of a water and sewer rate survey.
"The water and sewer rates survey was just published and it shows we are right in the average for our state," McCurdy said.
In other business, the Source Water Protection Plan has been approved by the Pa. Department of Environmental Protection.

Lavonia Marie Garber Kriegel

Lavonia Marie Garber Kriegel, age 95, of Erie, passed away Sunday, April 15, 2012 at Sarah A. Reed Retirement Center.
She was born in Sedalia, Mo. on Oct. 27, 1916 a daughter of the late Jesse Weaver Garber and Gladys Irene Gimple Garber.
Lavonia graduated from Ridgway High School in Ridgway.
She was a classical pianist and she also loved to decorate. Lavonia was an avid reader and a wonderful cook.

Educators adapt to increase in autistic students

Diagnoses of autism and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have reached unprecedented highs across the nation, with one in 88 children to be diagnosed this year, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study released on March 29.
This has raised concerns and drawn attention to the needs of children and families living with ASD. While autism remains without a definitive cause or known cure, much of the focus at the individual level surrounds treatment, as well as schooling of children with an ASD.

In 1912, area news took precedence over Titanic tragedy

A hundred years of hindsight have allowed for increased research and speculation regarding the sinking of the Titanic in the early morning hours of April 15, 1912. Today, stories about the disaster are everywhere, featured in countless books, movies, and newspaper and magazine articles. Different angles of the tragedy are continuously examined, with topics ranging from the fictional story portrayed in the hit blockbuster movie "Titanic," to a recent article discussing the fates of the dogs that were onboard the ship, to ongoing debates related to how to best preserve the site of the wreckage.

Marko M. Bolitiski, 83, of 61 Railroad St., Daguscahonda, died Sunday morning, April 15, 2012 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a brief illness.
He was born Jan. 11, 1929 in Daguscahonda, a son of the late Joseph and Barbara Francis Bolitiski.
On July 3, 1954 in Oakland, Maryland, he married Mary Ellen Jordan Bolitiski, who survives.

Ridgway softball falls 8-2 to Coudersport Lady Falcons

Ridgway softball lost 8-2 in a home matchup with Coudersport Friday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
Coudersport would strike for a single run in the first inning as Brianna Majot would walk to lead off the game. Majot advanced to second and third on wild pitches before advancing home on a groundout off the bat of Kiersten Counts to give the Lady Falcons a 1-0 lead.
