Ben Carson Reading Room now open

JOHNSONBURG – The Ben Carson Reading Room is now open for students to get lost in the many pages of books within the aesthetically pleasing atmosphere.
The Ben Carson Reading Room is within the Johnsonburg Elementary School library, and it not only offers a variety of books but also cozy chairs and colors. The accomplishment is a thing to celebrate for Johnsonburg. Jennifer Hobbs, Elementary Principal at Johnsonburg Area Elementary School was enthusiastic about the renovated space.

EBooks coming soon to a library near you

JOHNSONBURG – Due to a huge request for the popular eBooks, local libraries including Johnsonburg, Ridgway, Wilcox and St. Marys will soon be offering the electronic version of many popular titles to patrons tentatively on May 24. These libraries are within the Seneca Library District that covers the counties of Cameron, Elk, Forrest, McKean and Warren.

Charity fashion show, luncheon will bring smiles to children

Susan J. "Susie" Smith, 89, of 635 Grant St., P.O. Box 1081 Saegertown, passed away Sunday, May 6, 2012, at Wesbury United Methodist Community, Meadville.
Susie was born in Johnsonburg on July 28, 1922, a daughter of the late Anthony and Josephine (DiNardo) Marrone.
On Nov. 19, 1949 Susie married John S. "Jack"  Smith, he survives.  Residing in Ridgway from 1949 until 1974 when they moved to Kittanning where they lived until coming to Saegertown in 2006.
She was a member of St. Bernadette's Roman Catholic Church, Saegertown.

Rams shut out St. Marys 7-0 to take county title

The Johnsonburg Rams put in another dominating effort on Saturday morning at Berwind Park, shutting out the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen 7-0 to win the 2012 Elk County Boys' Baseball Tournament title.
The Rams spread their runs out over their six times at bat, scoring one in each of the first two innings, two in the third, and three in the sixth.
Johnsonburg assistant coach Jim Holmberg credited his team's good pitching and defense with contributing to their victory in this year's tournament.

Crusaders down Elkers in consolation game

The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team defeated the Ridgway Elkers by a 4-3 score Saturday afternoon at Berwind Park to take third place in the Elk County Baseball Tournament.
The Crusaders, now 9-5 on the season, will play host to the Bradford Owls this afternoon at Berwind Park. Game time is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
In Saturday’s game the Crusaders took the 3-0 lead after three innings, with Ridgway tying the game with one in the fourth and two in the top half of the fifth. Elk Catholic scored the eventual winning run in the home half of the fifth inning.

Authority questions DEP construction permit

Following a fine from the Department of Environmental Protection [DEP], the Ridgway Township Municipal Authority is questioning the validity of a construction permit detailing modifications to the Boot Jack Pump Station.
The Authority was fined last summer following a reading conducted by DEP officials which found a higher concentration of byproducts permissible in the water system.
According to Works Superintendent Carl Gosnell, the DEP recommended modifications may not be suitable for the township's system.

Signs of Suicide program receives Palumbo grant

ST. MARYS – Recently Dickinson Center, Inc. (DCI) received a $92,000 grant from the A.J. and Sigismunda Palumbo Charitable Trust for the organization's Signs of Suicide Prevention Program (SOS).
The grant ensures the continuation of the program, aimed at reaching middle and high school students in Elk and Cameron counties. The goal of the SOS program is to teach students the specific action steps needed to respond to signs of suicide by teaching and emphasizing the program's message of "A.C.T."-- Acknowledge, Care, Tell.

Lady Crusaders win Elk County Softball Tournament

Elk County Catholic softball won the Elk County Softball Tournament with a 3-1 victory over St. Marys in the championship game Friday at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.

Johnsonburg Rams reach Elk County Baseball Tournament finals with 15-5 win

ST. MARYS – The Johnsonburg Rams advanced to today’s championship game of the Elk County Baseball Tournament with a 15-5, six-inning victory over the Ridgway Elkers Friday afternoon at Berwind Park.
The Rams play St. Marys Area, this morning at 10 a.m. for the 2012 crown. The Dutch defeated the Elk County Catholic Crusaders 10-6 Friday in the late game. The Elkers will meet the Crusaders in the consolation game, which is slated for a noon start.
