Sr. John Frances Aiello, SSJ

Sr. John Frances Aiello, SSJ, 88, of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Northwestern Pennsylvania, died on Dec. 3, 2012.
She was in her 60th year of religious life. She was born in Johnsonburg on Sept. 1, 1924, the daughter of the late John and Frances Chirillo Aiello. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph from Holy Rosary parish in Johnsonburg on Aug. 30, 1953 and professed her final vows on Aug. 15, 1959. She celebrated her Golden Jubilee (50 years) in 2003.

Church shooting leaves one dead

COUDERSPORT – Gunfire erupted during service at a Coudersport church Sunday, morning leaving one dead and the alleged shooter in police custody.
According to reports from the Coudersport-based Pennsylvania State Police, at around 11:22 a.m. on Sunday morning the alleged shooter, 52-year-old Coudersport resident Greg Eldred, walked into the First United Presbyterian Church at Main and Fourth streets in Coudersport before reportedly firing shots and killing 53-year-old Darlene J. Sitler of Coudersport.

Elk County Concert Choir performs

ST. MARYS – The Elk County County Concert Choir delighted a packed house at Sacred Heart Church in St. Marys on Saturday evening with its special Christmas program, "It's Beginning to Look Like Christmas."
This was the second performance by the choir; the first was held on Nov. 27 at St. Leo Magnus Church in Ridgway. Refreshments and a social followed Saturday's performance.

Martha M. Erhard Holmberg

Martha M. Erhard Holmberg, 89, of Shinglehouse, formerly of Portville, N.Y., passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012 in Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport.
Born May 25, 1923 in Ridgway, she was a daughter of Wilbur and Susie Walker Erhard. On Feb. 11, 1942 in Ridgway, she married Arthur M. Holmberg, who passed away on Aug. 22, 1989.
Mrs. Holmberg attended Ridgway High School. During World War II, Mrs. Holmberg served as a WAVE in the U.S. Navy. She was later employed at Fibercel Corporation in Portville.

Marlon E. Fields Sr.

Marlon E. Fields Sr., age 61, of Shawmut Road, Brockport, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at his residence.
He was born March 9, 1951, in Ridgway, son of the late Wayne A. and Betty Jane Stubbs Fields.
He was married to Joyce M. Gelnett, who preceded him in death on Jan. 29, 2002.
A Protestant by faith, Marlon was a member of the Horton Township Sportsmen's Club in Brockport. He enjoyed hunting and racing, and also enjoyed hanging out at Sheetz drinking coffee with his buddies. Marlon especially loved "Nuge," his dog which was his faithful companion and best friend.

Deadline approaching for Angel Giving Tree program

Dickinson Center, Inc. [DCI] is in need of sponsors to participate in the 4th annual Pat Work Memorial Christmas Project.
Last year, 221 children from Cameron, Elk, McKean and Potter counties received gifts and clothing as part of the Christmas Project. This year DCI is hoping to fulfill the wishes of 180 children, but has 35 remaining children to be selected from the Angel Giving Tree.
The project was named after Patricia "Pat" Work, a therapist at Dickinson for many years prior to her passing in 2003.

Boy Scouts benefit from United Way funding

ST. MARYS – The Bucktail Council, Boy Scouts of America covers an area including Elk, Cameron, Jefferson and Clearfield counties, and the western portion of Centre County, and consists of 2,300 scouts and nearly 1,000 leaders, according to scout executive Greg Bennett.
The Bucktail Council is one of the organizations that receives funding from the St. Marys Area United Way. Bennett explained that this funding is indispensable to the organization, as it makes up between eight and nine percent of the Bucktail Chapter's $650,000 to $700,000 annual budget.

Sinibaldi Christmas Concert set for Dec. 14

ST. MARYS - Area residents seeking some Christmas spirit and holiday cheer need look no further than the Queen of the World Church on Friday, Dec. 14 at 7:30 p.m., when area musicians will gather for this year's Nicholas J. Sinibaldi Concert Band Christmas Spectacular Concert. This year's concert band is under the direction of director Chris Gankosky.

Elk Regional adds equipment for patient support

ST. MARYS – Elk Regional Health Center has been busy fundraising to support their patients, especially those who use their Women’s Imaging Center. Elk Regional was recently a part of the “Bras for Cause” at the Elk Mountain Winery, participated in the Bavarian Fall Fest and held a 5K run/walk and a four hour Zumba fitness party.

Exhibit now open

Patrons viewed an extensive collection of dolls during the Elk County Historical Society's Christmas Toy Exhibit/Open House Friday night in the Center House Museum along Center Street in Ridgway. The Historical Society would like to acknowledge Lillian Finno and family, the Johnsonburg Public Library and the residents of Johnsonburg for their donation of dolls and accessories. The exhibit will reopen today from 1 to 4 p.m. Hot chocolate and Christmas treats will be served. The event is free and open to the public. The display will be available until the end of January by special appointment.
