Ridgway boys soccer won 3-2 over St. Marys in the consolation game of the Elk County Soccer Tournament held Saturday morning at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
Chris Persinger scored the game-winning goal as he was able to get enough of a crossing pass to roll it into the net on a wet field after a second half downpour.
JOHNSONBURG â€“Â A Johnsonburg man is facing drug charges after authorities, in raiding his home, uncovered what is being called a "sophisticated and substantial" marijuana-growing operation at the residence.
According to affidavits, Troopers with the Pennsylvania State Police Troop C Vice Unit were notified of the existence of a marijuana-growing operation at the 433 Second Ave. home of Edward Joseph Pisani, 54, by a phone call from an unidentified source on Sept. 4.
Area residents are encouraged to participate in the American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Study-3, a nationwide study being conducted in St. Marys on Sept. 11 and 12 at the Sacred Heart Parish Center on Center Street.
Strong line play from Coudersport and bullish running from Coudersport running back Mitch Freeman led to a 36-13 victory over Ridgway Friday night at Memorial Field.
Freeman finished with 140 yards on 21 carries for the Falcons. Coudersport as a team ran up 305 yards on the ground. Counterpart Caden Whitman was held to 60 yards on 12 carries after rushing for over 200 yards in Week 1.
Frederic B. Oknefski, 87, of Montmorenci Rd., Ridgway, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2012 at the Lutheran Home at Kane following a lengthy illness.
He was born March 3, 1925 in Ridgway, son of the late Benjamin C. and Minnie (Pearson) Oknefski.
On Dec. 6, 1947, he married Mary E. Hoffman, who survives.
He was a lifelong resident of Ridgway and a 1943 graduate of the Ridgway High School.
SMETHPORT â€“Â The Smethport Hubbers (1-1) got off to a fast start despite a weather delay and finished with a punishing running game to topple winless Johnsonburg, 36-20.
Smethport was fueled by senior quarterback Clay Schuler, who ran for 144 yards and scored two touchdowns on the ground and one in the air. When Schuler wasn't busy racking up rushing yards, he teamed up with senior running back Karl Lightner on a cunning quarterback option play that routinely caught the Rams off guard.
Lightner eclipsed the 100-yard mark himself and scored a touchdown.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ Johnsonburg volleyball rallied by winning the final two sets in a 3-2 (25-17, 20-25, 22-25, 25-18, 15-9) victory over Ridgway Thursday night at Johnsonburg Area High School.
ST. MARYS - Criminal charges have been filed against the Elk County Humane Society's former treasurer and financial advisor, Richard Allan Danz, 47, of 376 Walnut St., St. Marys, in connection with the alleged embezzlement of funds through his position with the organization, as well as charges alleging he defrauded clients of investments made through his private tax preparation business.
A quintet of Ridgway Elker golfers turned in a combined total of 189 strokes, believed to be a new school record as they toppled visiting St. Marys, who finished with 233 shots on Thursday at Laurel Mill Golf Course in Ridgway.
The Elkers were led by Josh Roselli, whose 2-under 34 earned him medalist honors on the day. He was closely contested by teammate Josh Mitchell who turned in an under-par performance with 35 strokes. Mitchell Gilmore followed with a 39, Jake Klawuhn with 40 strokes, and T.J. Schlimm got up and down for a 41 to round out the scoring.
The Ridgway Township Municipal Authority continued discussion over updating a four-year-old control system during Thursday night's regular meeting.
The township's current SCADA [supervisory control and data acquisition] system, built and installed by Emerson Process in 2008, controls and monitors the tank levels and pump stations.
Chairman Ed LaValle advised the board that a decision should be made no later than the December meeting to allow time for finance manager Jeff Schutz to factor it into the budget.
