Another arson case reported in Johnsonburg

JOHNSONBURG – A small fire reportedly originated in the basement of an unoccupied house along Main Street in Johnsonburg early Saturday morning. The fire has been ruled an arson, at least the ninth such case reported in Elk County since May 30.
Fire departments were called at 1:52 a.m. Saturday morning, Aug. 25 at 236 Main St. in Johnsonburg. The fire damaged the abandoned residential structure and State Police Fire Marshal Greg Agosti ruled the blaze to be arson.
Damage was reportedly minimal although a dollar estimate is not available at this time. There were no injuries reported.

South Street Botanicals creates a customer friendly experience

June was a time of transition for South Street Botanicals in Ridgway, something owner Brandy Raubenstrauch says was simply cosmetic.
“I like change a lot,” Raubenstrauch said. “This also gave us the opportunity to help us increase our retail space and separate the Tea House.”
The new layout features the gift shop in the garden conservatory where the Tea House was originally.

Sherry Myers

Sherry Myers, 43, of 89 Old Bradford Rd., Mt. Jewett, passed away Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, at her residence.
Born June 22, 1969, in Kane, she was a daughter of Edward and Mary Cesario McClelland. On April 22, 1989, in Mt. Jewett, she married Russ Myers who survives.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two brothers, Joe McClelland of Mt. Jewett and Ed (Melissa) McClelland of Johnsonburg; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Michael McClelland.

Andrew C. Reigle

Andrew C. Reigle, age 82, of 62 Steis Dr., Ridgway, passed away on Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, at his residence following a short illness.
He was born on Dec. 16, 1929 in Sandusky, Ohio, son of the late Ralph and Dorothy (Brauer) Reigle of Florida.
On July 17, 1948, he married Bettie Henry who still resides at their home in Ridgway. They lived in Pennsylvania for 25 years and owned the Shelvey Summit Ski Lodge. They then moved to Key Largo, Fla. for 20 years where Andrew loved to boat and fish. They moved back to Pennsylvania to be closer to their family.

Martha L. Carnessali

Martha L. Carnessali, age 94, of Route 219, Ridgway, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012 Highland View Health Care in Brockway.
She was born July 8, 1918 in Crenshaw, daughter of the late Joseph and Sue Lescovensky Mehall. She married Aldo Carnessali, who preceded her in death in 1957.
She was a member of Holy Cross Church in Brandy Camp.
She is survived by a daughter, LaVonne M. Shugars of Brockport; a son, Gary Carnessali of Johnsonburg; a sister, Genevieve Salvadori of Brockport; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A ranch built for children slated for grand opening

Flying Dove Ranch located along Old Red Mill Dam Road just outside of Ridgway will hold their Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Sunday, Aug. 26 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
There will be food, refreshments, games, horse and buggy rides, face painting, clowns, balloon animals and more. The ranch is conveniently located 8.5 miles north of Ridgway off of Montmorenci Road and encases visitors within its 82 acres of outdoor tranquility.

Borough replaces tax collector

JOHNSONBURG – The Borough of Johnsonburg officially terminated its contract with the Central Tax Bureau of Pennsylvania [CENTAX] at a special council meeting Thursday morning.
In its place officials voted unanimously to appoint H. A. Berkheimer as its tax collector.
"Right now we have an agreement with CENTAX to collect our local earned income tax," said borough manager Mary Polaski. "The Elk County Tax Collection Committee has recently cancelled their contract and has hired Berkheimer to replace them because CENTAX was not living up to the contract."

Treatment plant faces setbacks

JOHNSONBURG – The wastewater treatment plant upgrade project is in its final stages of completion.
During Tuesday's Johnsonburg Municipal Authority meeting, Uni-Tec Engineer Dan Guss said the project is in the process of being closed but due to a technical problem with the PENNVEST computer system they have been unable to process a recent payment request.

BCAT to benefit region

The Brockway Center for Arts and Technology [BCAT], a multiyear collaborative effort, is currently in the final stage of its planning phase. Its doors are scheduled to open in January 2013 with initial program offerings in medical billing and coding, and pharmacy technician.
BCAT board members were on hand during a recent meeting of the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission's board of directors to discuss the newly-established facility.

CENTAX closure may be imminent

Following the replacement of Elk County's former earned income tax (EIT) collector CENTAX, by officials citing the company's failure to process tax returns and distribute funds in a timely manner, reports that the company is soon to shut down operations for good have begun to surface.
