Lady Elkers host golf match

Ridgway girls golf hosted the first of two scheduled home matches Thursday afternoon at Laurel Mill Golf Course.
Ridgway, DuBois, Brookville, Punxsutawney, Brockway and Curwensville all competed at Laurel Mill.
For Ridgway, senior Logan Feronti led the team with a score of 60. Sam Carobine and Sarah Szczotka each carded scores of 68 and Shania Reitz finished with a score of 80 to round out the top four scores that counted as Ridgway finished with a team score of 276. Beth Renaud carded a score of 82 and Emily Spiers had a mark of 88.

Ridgway volleyball downs St. Marys Lady Dutch, 3-0

ST. MARYS – The Ridgway Lady Elker volleyball team handed the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch a 3-0 setback last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Lady Elkers won the first set by a 28-26 score. They took the second set 25-15 and won the third set 25-13 to win the match.

Ramettes drop tough match to strong DuBois team

JOHNSONBURG – The Ramettes turned in a worthwhile performance Thursday but fell short against a powerful DuBois tennis team in a 9-0 defeat.
"DuBois is an outstanding team," said Johnsonburg head girls varsity tennis coach Gregg Dauber. "We played well but when we made some shots, [DuBois] made better shots. You can tolerate losing and playing well, and we never like losing, but playing as well as we did and still losing makes it easier to deal with."

Former Humane Society treasurer taken into custody

ST. MARYS – The St. Marys City Police report that former Elk County Humane Society treasurer and financial advisor Richard A. Danz was taken into custody on Wednesday, Sept. 12 in North Carolina.
Criminal charges have been filed against Danz, 47, of 376 Walnut St., St. Marys, in connection with the alleged theft of funds through his position with the organization, as well as charges alleging he defrauded clients of investments made through his private tax preparation business.

Progress continues with East Branch project

JONES TWP. - Representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pittsburgh District, provided an update on the ongoing East Branch Safety Project during a stakeholders' meeting held Wednesday morning at the lake.
Numerous personnel from local and state agencies, as well as several property owners, attended the meeting in an effort to stay abreast of the project.

Ridgway woman charged with theft of employer's laptop

JOHNSONBURG – A Ridgway woman formerly employed with the WDDH radio station in Ridgway and charged with the alleged theft of a laptop from the company was arraigned Wednesday on a charge of theft by unlawful taking, a misdemeanor of the first degree, in District Court.
The affidavit alleges that Nancy Jean Bodien, 36, of 45 Fremont Ave., Ridgway, took into her possession a laptop computer belonging to the WDDH radio station following her resignation on May 29, 2012.

Johnsonburg man waives hearing on assault involving firearm

JOHNSONBURG – A Johnsonburg man wanted by police and considered armed and dangerous after fleeing the scene of a domestic dispute on Aug. 16 in which he allegedly threatened the victim's life and his own while brandishing a shotgun, waived his preliminary hearing in District Court on Wednesday.
According to an affidavit, Justin F. Latcovich, 26, of Ridgway, has been charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, making terroristic threats, and simple assault following a domestic disturbance at his Center Street home on Aug. 16.

Water quality monitoring continues throughout county

Water quality monitoring efforts throughout Elk County are progressing, according to updates given during Tuesday’s meeting of the Elk County Gas Task Force.
Steve Putt, director of the Elk County Conservation District, said the county is continuing to monitor water quality in area watersheds and seven of 11 planned satellite telemetry systems to water monitor quality are now “on board.”

High school bands tuning up for Sounds of Autumn

ST. MARYS – Talented young musicians from throughout the area will showcase their skills at the annual Sounds of Autumn Band Competition on Saturday, Sept. 22 at St. Marys Area High School's Dutch Country Stadium.
The competition, a cooperative effort between St. Marys Area and Elk County Catholic high schools, is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. following the opening ceremony at 12:45 p.m., where both bands will join together in performing the national anthem.

Supervisors appoint tax collector

BROCKPORT – The Horton Township Board of Supervisors appointed a tax collector during their regular meeting Wednesday night.
Supervisors voted unanimously in favor of appointing H.A. Berkheimer as its local service tax collector.
Secretary Dennis Thompson noted that the Central Tax Bureau of Pennsylvania [CENTAX] had been previously collecting the township's taxes.
