Ruby Gibbs

Ruby Gibbs, 95, passed away in the afternoon of Wednesday, May 2 at Glens Falls Hospital in Glens Falls, N.Y.
Ruby was born March 14, 1917 in Ridgway, the daughter of the late Lee and Anne Bowers Gier.
Ruby was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Robert Gibbs, on July 15, 1993, and her siblings, Cecile Johnson, Grace Cyone, Pearl Plaster, Amos Gier, Aloysius Gier and Virginia Stauffer.
Ruby and Bob were former owners of Rest-A-Y-L Restaurant and Bar in Newcomb, N.Y.

Gardner Hill Community Church vandals sentenced in Elk County Court

Three of the five defendants charged in the vandalization of the Gardner Hill Community Church in Weedville were sentenced Monday in Elk County Court.
Martin Andrew Chicola, 22, of St. Marys, John Paul Gier, 22, of St. Marys, and Bradley Alan Vanvoorhis, 19, of Weedville, pleaded guilty to charges of felony burglary and misdemeanor criminal mischief before Judge Richard Masson during Monday's Return Day proceedings.

CAPSEA event outgrows location

Although the third annual Polar Sweet Express event hosted by CAPSEA, Inc. [Citizens Against Physical, Sexual and Emotional Abuse] is 10 months away, Executive Director Billie Jo Weyant has already begun making plans.
The event, sponsored by Ridgway BiLo and Northwest Savings Bank, is expected to be held in the beginning of February of 2013.
Last year's event held in the Franklin Center in St. Marys raised over $4,500 to assist in supplying abuse victims seeking shelter with basic necessities.

Grumley stuns Ridgway with walk-off home run

JOHNSONBURG – With one swing of the bat, the marathon came to an end.
Tied 11-11 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Johnsonburg sophomore Cameron Grumley licked his chops at a 1-1 offering and sent the ball over the left center field fence for a walk-off 2-run home run to beat rival Ridgway, 13-11.
"On a 1-1 count, it looked like a fastball and I got it, hit it, but I didn't think it was gone," Grumley said. "I saw the outfielder running back and thought it was just over his head but it went over the fence too."

Lady Elkers win in fading daylight, 17-14

Johnsonburg and Ridgway softball lit up the scoreboard during Monday's early evening hours.
Turns out Ridgway's win was sealed by the night's dark skies.
Ridgway won 17-14 in a 6-inning game which was called because of darkness.
The game was called at approximately 8:15 p.m. after starting at 6 p.m. It was the second game of a doubleheader between the two teams. Johnsonburg won the first game, 9-7.

Ramettes take consolation game in County Tournament

Johnsonburg softball was the consolation game winner of the Elk County Softball Tournament with a 9-7 victory over Ridgway Monday afternoon.
The game was rescheduled from Friday afternoon.
Johnsonburg took the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Kiana Myers would single with one out. After a groundout, Myers scored on a single from Tommi Wildnauer to put the Ramettes ahead 6-5.

Ben Carson Reading Room now open

JOHNSONBURG – The Ben Carson Reading Room is now open for students to get lost in the many pages of books within the aesthetically pleasing atmosphere.
The Ben Carson Reading Room is within the Johnsonburg Elementary School library, and it not only offers a variety of books but also cozy chairs and colors. The accomplishment is a thing to celebrate for Johnsonburg. Jennifer Hobbs, Elementary Principal at Johnsonburg Area Elementary School was enthusiastic about the renovated space.

EBooks coming soon to a library near you

JOHNSONBURG – Due to a huge request for the popular eBooks, local libraries including Johnsonburg, Ridgway, Wilcox and St. Marys will soon be offering the electronic version of many popular titles to patrons tentatively on May 24. These libraries are within the Seneca Library District that covers the counties of Cameron, Elk, Forrest, McKean and Warren.

Charity fashion show, luncheon will bring smiles to children

Susan J. "Susie" Smith, 89, of 635 Grant St., P.O. Box 1081 Saegertown, passed away Sunday, May 6, 2012, at Wesbury United Methodist Community, Meadville.
Susie was born in Johnsonburg on July 28, 1922, a daughter of the late Anthony and Josephine (DiNardo) Marrone.
On Nov. 19, 1949 Susie married John S. "Jack"  Smith, he survives.  Residing in Ridgway from 1949 until 1974 when they moved to Kittanning where they lived until coming to Saegertown in 2006.
She was a member of St. Bernadette's Roman Catholic Church, Saegertown.
