JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg baseball remained undefeated on the season with an 8-1 victory over Bradford Saturday at Knothole Area Recreational Park.

School district turns down swimming co-op

The Ridgway Area School District Board of Directors voted against participating in a co-op swimming program with the St. Marys Area School District during Tuesday night's regular meeting.
Superintendent Dr. Michael O'Brien said even though the board did not reach an agreement Tuesday night they will continue to work toward instituting a co-op program.

Crusaders edge Raiders 6-5 on walk-off walk

With the score knotted up at 5-all in the bottom of the seventh inning and two runners on for the Crusaders and no outs, Brookville intentionally walked ECC's Ivan Wortman to load the bases during a contest played at Berwind Park on Friday afternoon. After striking out the next batter, Brookville pitcher Brock Beitz threw four straight balls to Jack Herzing, giving the Crusaders the 6-5 win on a walk-off walk that scored Brock McCullough.

Ethnicity Festival coming to Ridgway this weekend

A festival to celebrate ethnicity will be coming to Ridgway, May 12 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Center Street. The Taste of Ethnicity Festival is courtesy of the Elk County Historical Society. The festival will offer a variety of food and music pertaining to the major ethnicities found in Elk County in the early 1800s.

Ridgway announces Students of the Month

The Ridgway Area School District's Students of the Month were honored during Tuesday night's school board meeting.
Fifth-grader Jocelyn Viglione was selected as the Elementary School Student of the Month. Jocelyn said she was very happy to be selected because it was her first time. Her future plans are to become a hairstylist and "maybe a teacher."
If she could change the world she would help to make it a better place by cleaning up litter and helping others when they are sick.

Superintendent responds to bus incident

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg Area School District Superintendent Dennis Crotzter responded to the bus accident that occurred on the morning of May 3 that was transporting 25 Elk County children on a field trip to the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh.

Child care center opens

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Thursday afternoon for Karen Fox's Child Care at 235 Monterey Ave. in the Borough of Ridgway.
Fox who graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Childhood Field of Studies and having worked in a large daycare facility in Pittsburgh for a year and a half is excited to begin her next venture back in her hometown.
Unlike the large daycare facilities that care for hundreds of children, Fox says her home center provides children with valuable one-on-one time that could potentially lead to a faster development.

'Walk-off' Rams strike again in comeback win over Gators

JOHNSONBURG – Call it sweet redemption for Johnsonburg right fielder Kyle Sheldon.
After three hard hit balls right at the Port Allegany defense, including one with the bases loaded to end the inning, Sheldon went from goat to hero with one swing of the bat, a timely 2-run walk-off single to center field in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat the visiting Gators, 7-6.

Dutchmen, Lady Crusaders win titles at county meet

JOHNSONBURG – The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen and Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders took home titles on Thursday afternoon at the 2012 Elk County Varsity Track and Field Meet hosted by the Johnsonburg Area High School.
In the boys' meet, St. Marys finished with 90 points, followed by ECC with 61 and Johnsonburg with 38. In the girls' meet, Elk Catholic ended the day with 100 points, while Johnsonburg had 62 and St. Marys 27.

Lady Elkers win in final at bat over Lady Wolves, 3-2

A Sydney Kovalyak 2-out single drove home the game's winning run for Ridgway softball in a 3-2 victory against Kane Thursday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
Jenni Thomas scored from second as Kovalyak singled into left field for the walk-off victory. Thomas reached as she hit a ball up the middle which could not be fielded cleanly. Thomas had enough speed to reach first base and then went to second on a wild pitch.
