Robert A. Zawatski, 66, of 127 Terra Cotta Rd., Johnsonburg, died on Sunday, June 23, 2013 at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital in Coudersport following a lengthy illness.
He was born on December 13, 1946 in Ridgway.
He married Catherine A. "Cathy" Tomaski on December 5, 1970 in the Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg; she survives.
Mr. Zawatski resided in Johnsonburg all his life. He graduated Johnsonburg High School in 1964
and was a member of the Holy Rosary Church.
He was employed by the Sylvania Corp., in St. Marys for 35 years.
Lois F. Sprague, 64, of 22 Bassett St., Jamestown, died at 2:30 a.m., Friday, June 7, 2013, in home, with her dear friend and caregiver, Marilyn Carlquist by her side, who along with hospice cared for her during her short but courageous battle with cancer.
She was born Sept. 20, 1948 in Johnsonburg, the daughter of the late Theodore B. Sprague and Violet (Dusch) Sprague of Johnsonburg.
A 1966 graduate of Johnsonburg Area High School, she was a member of United Methodist Church of Johnsonburg.
Patricia Marie Gordon Gnan, 52, of Ridgway died unexpectedly Saturday, June 22, 2013.
She was born March 15, 1961, the daughter of the late William and Margaretta Gill Gordon.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, animals, and riding motorcycles. She overcame many hardships including being a two-year cancer survivor and can now rest in peace.
ST. MARYS â€“ Police have arrested a 20-year-old St. Marys man who authorities say is responsible for a pair of pipe bombs that were planted at two separate Elk County locations over the course of one week last month.
KEATING TWP. â€“ A Smethport man has been charged with brutalizing a woman and terrorizing her family after allegedly attacking and raping a mother of three in the presence of her children, ages two, six and eight.
FOX TWP. â€“ Visitors to the Fox Township Municipal Building can view a new mural depicting various township landmarks and buildings created by Joette Mosier Smith, a Fox Township artist.
During a monthly meeting of the Elk County Conservation District, board members discussed a dirt and gravel project that will reportedly assist in pollution prevention in Jones Township.
WILCOX â€“ The Wilcox American Legion baseball swept a doubleheader with Bradford on a sweltering Sunday afternoon at Jones Township Community Park.
Wilcox won the first game 7-0 and then took the nightcap 8-1 over Bradford to take all three games from the Bradford Legion in the season series.
With the recent pressure-washing of the church, the renovations to St. Leo Magnus Roman Catholic Church are now completed. The most recent additions to the church were the statues of the Good Shepherd and the Angel, and the votive candleholders inside the church. Father Brian Vossler and parishioners of the church express their appreciation to Dennis and Rose Heindl for their generosity.
ST. MARYS â€“ The Elk County Community Foundation Board of Directors recently approved several grants totaling $22,170 which were distributed to area organizations from the Harrison and Muriel Dauer Stackpole Family Fund. Those receiving grants were the Community Education Council (CEC), Elkland Search and Rescue, the City of St. Marys Police Department and Elk County Catholic High School.
