School District approves budget

Residents of Ridgway will not see an increase in property and occupation taxes after the Ridgway Area School District Board of Directors adopted the 2012-2013 General Fund Budget during Tuesday night's regular meeting.
Finance Manager Brent Rhoads presented a budget with revenues and expenditures of $11,831,371 with a decrease of $191,734 compared to last year's budget.
The breakdown of the budget includes: local revenues of $4,645,326; state revenues of $6,876,108; federal revenues of $116,000; a use of fund balance of $43,937; and a grant contingency of $150,000.

Supervisors review notifications

WILCOX – The Jones Township Board of Supervisors held their regular meeting Monday night in the kitchen of the Community Center along Faries Street in Wilcox.
Chairman Mike DePonceau reviewed Act 13 notifications for four conventional and unconventional wells in Jones and Ridgway Townships.
DePonceau announced that Kelsey O'Rourke of Jones Township was awarded this year's scholarship from the Elk County Association of Township Officials.
A request was received from Brenda Hodgdon for changes to be made to the open burning policy.

Task force looks at Marcellus emergency response needs

At Monday's meeting of the Elk County Gas Task Force held at the new 911 Center in Ridgway, McKean County Emergency Management Agency Director Bruce Manning gave task force members an update of efforts to educate first responders about natural gas and oil sites.

Council picks ambulance service

JOHNSONBURG – Following a recommendation from the Johnsonburg Fire Department the Johnsonburg Borough Council approved a resolution to designate the St. Marys Area Ambulance Service as the primary provider of emergency services in Johnsonburg.
Prior to the meeting, a three-man committee was formed consisting of council members James DeAngelo, James R. DePanfilis and Ronald King to review outside ambulance service providers.

2012 Relay for Life event a 'big success'

A massive show of community support for the 2012 Elk County Relay for Life was on display at the Fox Township Community Park on Friday during the opening ceremony of the 24-hour event.
Emcee Roben Daghir said the goals were to increase awareness of cancer in the area and raise the funds needed to combat the disease, and termed the event was a "big success." Monetary donations for this year's event totaled roughly $13,450.

Cancer survivor shares her story at Relay for Life event

The 2012 Elk County Relay for Life event held at the Fox Township Community Park this past Friday took time to honor loved ones who lost their battles with cancer, as well as celebrate the survivors like keynote speaker Patty Greene.
Greene, a lifelong resident of Elk County, was first diagnosed with breast cancer at age 52.
In relating her story, Greene said her battle with cancer began in January 2010 when a routine mammogram revealed "something suspicious." Greene said doctors had detected a "little lump about the size of a pea."

Student's cartoon earns top place in national competition

ST. MARYS – Elk County Catholic High School freshman Tony Hanes captured first place for his editorial cartoon as part of a national competition.
"It shows how America is in debt and how we always rely on China to get us out," Hanes explained his cartoon.
The winning cartoon depicts U.S. President Barack Obama stranded in a hole referred to as "Debt Valley" while being rescued by a helicopter with "China" inscribed on it.

James P. Raybuck

James P. Raybuck, 82, of 428 Smith St., Ridgway, died Sunday, June 10, 2012, at Elk Regional Health Center.
He was born January 21, 1930, in Ridgway, the son of Clair and Elbirta Penfield Raybuck.
On November 29, 1958, in Brookville, he married Lena Dunn, she survives.
Mr. Raybuck had resided most of his life in Ridgway. He was Methodist by faith. He was a member of the American Legion and the Ridgway Elks. He had been employed as a train conductor with the Pennsy Railroad.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Hilda J. Gasbarre

Hilda J. Gasbarre, age 81, of 121 Polk Ave., Ridgway, died early Monday morning, June 11, 2012, at Pinecrest Manor following a lengthy illness.
She was born June 24, 1930, in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late Walter J. and Grace (Meise) Winters. She married Gene L. Gasbarre on Dec. 28, 1950, he survives. She had resided in Ridgway for the last 65 years and was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church.
Hilda enjoyed playing bingo and watching Pittsburgh sports. She had been employed at Quality Components for 30 years.

Patricia A. Rees Covel

Patricia A. Rees Covel, 80, of Pinecrest Manor, died Saturday, June 9, 2012, at her residence, following a lengthy illness.
She was born August 5, 1931, in Ridgway, the daughter of Paul and Cecilia Scherer Rees.
On August 6, 1960, she married Harry N. Covel, he survives.
Mrs. Covel was a lifelong Ridgway resident. She was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church, and the Good Samaritan Society. She was a graduate of St. Leo’s School. She had been employed at United Natural Gas until 1960.
