As the second week of the trial of Lawrence Earl Donachy commenced Monday morning, testimony concluded and jurors began the day with a field trip to St. Marys, where they were shown various sites of interest pertaining to the trial. Donachy, 36, is accused of the April 5-6, 1999 rape and murder of 56-year-old St. Marys beautician Irene Challingsworth at her home on 213 Walnut St.
Marina T. Agens, 86, of 101 N. Mill St., Ridgway, died Sunday, October 16, 2011, in the home of her sister, Beverly MacDonald, at 1533 Front St.
She was born January 30, 1925, in Ridgway, the daughter of the late R. Joseph and Lavina M. Ross Tettis. She married Donald J. Agens, who predeceased her on Februaury 16, 2001.
Mrs. Agens had resided most of her life in Ridgway. She was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, the C.D. of A., and the Ridgway Senior Center.
Milfred H. Nelson, 86, of 201 Depot St., Ridgway, died peacefully on Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, after a brief stay at Elk Haven Nursing Home.
He was born Aug. 23, 1925, in Ridgway, son of the late William B. and Grace E. (Gardner) Nelson. He married Betty J. Keneske on Feb. 7, 1945; she preceded him in death on May 31, 2009.
He had resided in Ridgway all of his life and was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He was a graduate of the Ridgway Area High School. He had been employed by the Elliott Company and then by Motion Control Industries for 40 years.
Ridgway boys soccer lost in its regular season finale by a 5-0 margin to Brockway Monday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
Ridgway had kept the Rovers at bay throughout much of the first 20 minutes as Elker goalkeeper Jesse Schneider made a number of good saves, including a one-handed leaping save on a shot by Phil Esposito.
Chris Calliari finally put the Rovers on the board with a goal with 21:05 remaining in the first half. Esposito was able to get a shot past the Ridgway defense with 12:17 left in the first half which put the Brockway lead 2-0.
October 16th
Ridgway’s quartet of seniors won 4-0 over Curwensville Saturday morning at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
The seniors are Ryan McClelland, Tad Pierce, Kyle Kinkead and Greg Paige.
“The seniors, I couldn’t be prouder of them,” Ridgway coach John Ogden said. “Ryan, he just came on this year and he picked it up right away. It’s been a blast and when you talk about leaders, those are the kind of leaders you want on your team. It’s nice to see them finish with a better season than they’ve been accustomed to. It’s a good group of kids.”
Mistakes hurt Curwensville in the first half.
Elker mistakes and Alex Holland put Curwensville ahead for good in the second half.
Holland rushed for 391 yards on 48 carries as Curwensville scored 28 unanswered points for a 36-16 victory over Ridgway Friday night on a muddy Memorial Field.
Pauline M. Neubert, 97, a resident of The Caring Place in Franklin, passed away Oct. 13, 2011, at her residence.
She was born June 7, 1914, in Johnsonburg, the daughter of Vincent and Leonoria Walcak Zawatski. On Oct. 15, 1949, she married Hilary F. Neubert, he predeceased her on April 3, 1974. Mrs. Neubert had recently moved to Franklin from Ridgway, where she had been a resident for 60 years. She was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed bingo, baseball, puzzles and helping others.
JOHNSONBURG – The visiting Kane Wolves (4-3) rode the momentum of four touchdowns Friday night from junior running back Jonah Smith to drop winless Johnsonburg (0-7), 42-7.
After a tight 7-7 game in the first quarter which saw Smith score his first touchdown of the night, Kane mounted a furious offensive attack to score four times in just under six minutes in the second quarter.
Always sisters, now a part of each other.
Maria Savino, sister of Frances DiIulio (aka Chickie), donated her kidney to save her sister’s life in April 2011. Savino was an absolute perfect match for her sister.Â
In quoting Helen Keller, Savino says, “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched; they must be felt with the heart.”

An expert forensic DNA scientist testified on Thursday, during day four of the homicide trial of Lawrence Earl Donachy, 36, who is charged in the April 5 or 6, 1999 death of Irene Challingsworth, a St. Marys beautician. The trial is being held at the Elk County Courthouse in Ridgway.
Pennsylvania State Police Forensic DNA Scientist Alex Glessner, employed for the past 10 years at the PSP Greensburg lab, provided extensive information on DNA profiling pertinent in the case.
