County makes technological improvements

The board of commissioners on Tuesday approved an accord by Zito Business for a fiber optic E-line connection between the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission and the Elk County Courthouse during a board meeting.

Supervisors adopt budget without real estate tax increase

The Ridgway Township Board of Supervisors adopted the 2013 budget during Tuesday afternoon's meeting.
The township has appropriated a general fund of $699,924.72 which does not include a real estate tax increase.
The budget includes the institution of a $52 local services tax per individual who works within Ridgway Township.
"There are no raises in real estate," said chairman John Gardner. "There was a LST [local services tax] tax adopted. Everything is the same except for the LST."

One Million Pennies Campaign continues

Students in the Ridgway Area School District recently collected pennies for the "One Million Penny Campaign" for the Ridgway Public Library. According to Diane Colgan, the library has collected close to 300,000 pennies so far to help offset the costs associated with a new porch and flooring.

WEEDVILLE – One of the county's resident bull elk recently found himself in a tangled situation after an encounter with what is believed to be a homemade hammock.

Borough adopts budget without tax hike

The Ridgway Borough Council adopted the 2013 budget without a tax hike during Monday night's regular meeting.
Council unanimously approved the $6 million budget without a tax increase following a public budget meeting held prior to the regular meeting.
The new budget includes a general fund of $1,568,745.
Council member Ralph Dussia made the motion to adopt the budget.

Ella Mae Powley

Ella Mae Powley, 94, of Bradford Manor, Bradford, formerly of Wilcox, died Sunday morning, Dec. 16, 2012 at Bradford Manor following a brief illness.
Powley was born Aug. 11, 1918 in Sergeant, daughter of the late Roy and Tirzah Reid Stanley.
She married the late George M. Powley on Oct. 22, 1938 in St. Nicholas Church, Sheffield; he died June 27, 2001.

Elkers win over Cameron County

December 18, 2012

After a defensive struggle in the first half, Ridgway was able to wear down Cameron County's defense in the second half and pull away for a 52-20 win over the Red Raiders Monday night at Ridgway Area High School.
Ridgway led 15-8 after a low-scoring first half of play.
"Coach (Cameron County coach Jon) Songer had a great game plan there," Ridgway coach Anthony Allegretto said. "They got those big kids standing in the zone, controlling the boards and they made us hit shots."

Former firefighter charged with arson waives hearing

ST. MARYS - A former Crystal Fire Department firefighter charged with setting fire to his own mobile camper for the insurance money waived his preliminary hearing Friday in District Court 59-3-03.
The July 9 camper fire at 333 North St. Marys St. was one in a wave of arsons that swept through Elk County in 2012.
An investigation into the fire resulted in criminal charges of arson and insurance fraud being filed against 25-year-old Michael Anthony Scolari, who was not a member of CFD at the time the arson took place.

Exchange students nestle into Johnsonburg Area School District

JOHNSONBURG – Exchange students Laura Sakalauskaite from Lithuania and Bagdad Abdurauf from Tajikistan are quickly adjusting to the Johnsonburg Area High School as their new home.  
Sakalauskaite is being hosted by the Cardoni family of Johnsonburg and Abdurauf is being hosted by the Field family of Johnsonburg. Lisa Gustafson, French teacher at the Johnsonburg Area High School, was approached by the Cardoni and Field family to host an exchange student.

James H. Dietz

December 17, 2012

James H. Dietz, 90, of 106 Linwood Ave., St. Marys, died on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012 at Dubois Nursing Home following a brief illness.
He was born Dec. 11, 1922 in Ridgway, a son of the late Joseph and Mary Pfingstler Dietz.
On June 14, 1947 in St. Mark's Church in Emporium, he married the late Elizabeth J. "Betty" Dietz, who preceded him in death on Feb. 7, 2012.
