Mental health care equally important in wake of tragedy

Following last week's mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., that left nearly 30 people dead, many of them children, an increased focus has been placed on the issue of gun control. With guns at the forefront of national discussion, an equally important issue-- providing adequate help for those with mental health issues-- has been overshadowed.

Lady Hubbers no match for Johnsonburg in 55-27 loss

JOHNSONBURG – The Ramettes (5-1) got off to a slow start Wednesday but regrouped quickly to topple visiting Smethport, 55-27
Johnsonburg was paced by junior Kassa Kocjancic, who finished with 14 points; she was complemented by fellow junior Chelsea Benson, who scored 10 points, along with seniors Rhianon Fowler and Brittany Watts, who finished with nine points apiece.

Lady Dutch down Ridgway Lady Elkers, 58-15

St. Marys girls' basketball won 58-15 over Ridgway Wednesday night in action at Ridgway Area High School.
The Lady Dutch took control from the start of the game and led 25-4 after the first quarter. Becky Krieg opened the game with two free throws before going to work on their full-court press.
"There's a lot of things that we're working at working on every game, every time we're in practice," St. Marys coach Leona Ho'ohuli said. "It is our defense, we are looking hard on our defense this year and the girls came out and did well."

School district continues to revise safety plans

Like all of the school districts across the country, the Ridgway Area School District [RASD] continues to evaluate their own safety measures following the school shooting in Newtown, Conn. last Friday that killed 20 children and six adults.
"Over the past year and a half, the Ridgway Area School District has reviewed and revised our safety plans," said RASD Superintendent Dr. Michael O'Brien. "We have collaborated with local law enforcement to maximize the efficiency of our safety drills and will continue to evaluate all of our safety measures.

Commission ups rate to meet match

In order to meet an anticipated cash match level for federal grant dollars for the rural planning organization (RPO) at the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission (NCPRPDC), officials voted Wednesday morning to increase the per capita rate for the six counties to 16.3 percent for 2013.

United Way funding fueling drug education in local schools

Ridgway wrestling falls to Port Allegany in home opener

Ridgway wrestling lost 60-3 to Port Allegany in the Elkers' home opener Tuesday night at Ridgway Area High School.
"Port Allegany's a great team," Ridgway coach David Fordoski said. "They have a lot of upperclassmen and they wrestled like that. They have a lot of mat experience. A lot of our kids are just starting to get their experience. They were able in a lot of the matches to get that extra takedown or the extra thing right at the end in the win. It's disheartening sitting on this side, seeing it happen but it's part of the learning process."

Young Rovers, forfeits doom Johnsonburg wrestling, 58-16

JOHNSONBURG – A slew of Brockway underclassmen came up big Tuesday night as the visiting Rovers earned a 58-16 win over the Rams on the wrestling mat in Johnsonburg.
The Rovers got six wins by underclassmen, three by freshmen and another three by sophomores, and took advantage of four wins by forfeit for the runaway victory.

Rebecca (Becky) Mae Johnson, 59, of Spring Creek Road, Ridgway, died suddenly at home on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012.
She was born on Sept. 2, 1953 in Ridgway, the daughter of Lila Jean Duffee Johnson of Dagus Mines and the late Theodore W. Johnson. She graduated from Ridgway Area High School, Class of 1971. Becky attended the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She worked at Aiello’s Restaurant for years. She then became owner/operator of a cleaning business. She was forced to retire due to health problems.

Donna Mae Guiffrida

Donna Mae Guiffrida, 79, of 28 Long Alley, Ridgway, and formerly of Wilcox, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 18, 2012 at Kane Community Hospital in Kane following a short illness.
She was born July 1, 1933 in Kane, daughter of the late Paul A. and Kathryn Weidert Dickinson.
She resided in Wilcox most of her life. She had lived a short time in Jamestown, N.Y.
She graduated from Wilcox High School in 1951 and from Jamestown Business College.
She was a member of St. Anne Church in Wilcox. Her favorite thing was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
