Motorcyclists enjoy 'Ride for the Elk'

BENEZETTE – The Keystone Elk Country Alliance (KECA) held its first annual Motorcycle Ride for the Elk on Saturday, July 27 and, despite the rainy weather, 58 motorcyclists turned out for the roughly 75-mile ride.

Trails group moving on after fire

Despite losing a series of expensive equipment in addition to a storage shed during a recent fire, members of the Tri-County Rails to Trails group said they intend on rebuilding in order to serve the trail's many users.

Richard E. Reitz

Richard E. Reitz, formerly of Wilcox, died on Monday, July 29, 2013 at the Masonic Village Health Care Center, Elizabethtown.
Born in Ridgway, he was the son of the late Damon and Edna Green Reitz.
He was the husband of Elizabeth Mecca Reitz of Elizabethtown and his first wife, Verna Summers Reitz, who died in 1993.
He retired as a machinist in Palmyra, and also worked at the Johnsonburg Paper Mill. He was a member of Palm Lutheran Church, Palmyra and past master of Masonic Lodge #675 F&AM, Johnsonburg.

Anne E. Defibaugh

Anne E. Defibaugh, 82, of 432 Lookout Ave., Ridgway, died July 30, 2013, at Pinecrest Manor.
She was born May 27, 1931, in Port Allegany, the daughter of Gordan and Signe Erickson Edgar.
On February 23, 1952, she married Howard Defibaugh, he survives.
Mrs. Defibaugh was Methodist by faith. She had been employed by North Penn Gas Co., Hamlin Bank and Trust Co., and by Producer’s Bank. She moved to Ridgway with her family in 1974. She was active with the Bloodmobile, American Cancer Society, Hospital Aux. Thrifty Shop and she was on the Board of the Elk County Historical Society.

Ridgway football hosts Carnegie Mellon Spread Wing-T camp

With football season coming quickly, Ridgway football hosted coaches from Carnegie Mellon University for the second straight year for a 2-day camp to learn the intricacies of the Wing-T offense.

Schuller retiring in September

After 30 years as borough manager for Ridgway, it appears one of the more constant figures at the local borough office will soon be a thing of the past.
Marty Schuller, who has devoted more than half his life to Ridgway, will retire in September.

Thompson addresses Keystone XL Pipeline

KERSEY – "Build it."
That is what Congressman Glenn "GT" Thompson (R-5) had to say regarding the Keystone XL Pipeline during a visit to Elk County earlier this week.
The project, which according to the website keystone-xl.com, "is a proposed 1,179-mile, 36-inch diameter crude oil pipeline beginning in Hardisty, Alberta, and extending south to Steele City, Neb."

Anna L. Anderson

Anna L. Anderson, 98, of 116 Dagus Mines Road, Kersey, died Monday, July 29, 2013, at the Ridgmont Assisted Living Facility in Ridgway after a brief illness.
She was born February 12, 1915 in Kersey, daughter of the late Claus and Clara Anderson.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Kersey High School, Class of 1933.
She also attended Grace Martin Secretarial School in Pittsburgh. She was a retired employee of Keystone Powdered Metal Company.
