SPRING CREEK TWP. â€“ A journey well over 10 years in the making finally came to an end Friday afternoon as the residents of Spring Creek Township ushered in a new beginning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the new William Tell Bridge.
The new structure is named for former township supervisor William Tell.
KERSEY â€“Â Cool and rainy weather Thursday evening did not dissuade a number of youngsters from showing off their abilities in the annual talent show at the Elk County Fair.
Janet Rose Shelander, age 74, of Duffy Apartments, Johnsonburg, died at home Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013 after a brief illness.
She was born June 17, 1939 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Edward and Stella (Kinny) Shelander.
She attended Johnsonburg schools and worked at Stackpole Carbon of Johnsonburg and St. Marys, Elcam, and the Deli of Johnsonburg Market Basket/Jubilee.
Kenneth M. Haupricht of Johnsonburg is off to a good start as he won the opening match with a 30 in the high power hunting rifle competition of the NRA National Silhouette Championships Thursday at the high power range of the Ridgway Rifle Club.
Susan Peery Rice (Churchton, Md.) was second overall with a 30 after dropping a 5-shot shoot-off to Haupricht; Cathy Winstead-Severin (Joplin, Mo.) was third with a 29.
As the NRA National Silhouette Championships move to the high power range of the Ridgway Rifle Club, on day one the match winner was a familiar one.
Cathy Winstead-Severin (Joplin, Mo.) was the match winner Thursday in the first of three days of competition in the high power standard rifle championships.
Winstead-Severin shot a 34 on the high power range, besting the field by two targets hit.
Wally Howard (Hazel Hurst) was the overall runner-up with a mark of 32 and Greg Engel (Flossmoor, Ill.) was third overall with a score of 31.
Students from April School of Dance performed several dance routines Wednesday night at the Elk County Fair.
A cleanup for a roughly nine-mile stretch of the Clarion River spanning from the Main Street bridge in Ridgway to the Portland Mills boat launch is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 13, according to Nick Irwin, an employee at Country Squirrel Outfitters, who came up with the idea for the event.
Allen E. "Brownie" Pearsall, 79, of Oknefski Road, Ridgway, died Monday, August 5, 2013 at Elk Haven Nursing Home.
He was born February 26, 1934, in Castle Garden, the son of the late Arthur H. and Louise Wolfe Pearsall Sr.
Formerly of Emporium, he was a self-employed TV repairman.
The NRA National Silhouette Championships welcomed a group of Australian shooters for the smallbore standard rifle and smallbore hunting rifle championships held Sunday through Tuesday at the Ridgway Rifle Club.
The 39th annual Elk County Fair opened Tuesday afternoon at the fairgrounds in Kersey. The traditional Opening Ceremony began at 6 p.m. with brief welcoming statements by local and county government officials and a baked good auction. New royalty was also crowned. The 2013 Elk County Fair Queen is Alexa Marciniak, 16, a junior at Johnsonburg High School. She is the daughter of Dave and Jane Marciniak. The Junior Queen is Audrey South, 14, a freshman at St. Marys Area High School. She is the daughter of Brad South and Jim and Leigh Aaron. The runner-up was Alexis Swanson of Kersey.
