Ridgway High School trap shooting team faces St. Marys South

The Ridgway High School trap shooting team took on St. Marys South at the Fox Township Sportsmen’s Club in recent action.
St. Marys South won the match 129-125.
For Ridgway, Jeremiah Amacher had the top team score by hitting 23 of 25 possible targets. Ricky Marzella was next with a 22. Brock Cook and Tyler Shilk each had scores of 21 for Ridgway. Kyle Hamilton, Tonya Harlan and Luke Pierce had scores of 19 for Ridgway to round out the top six.

JMA looking for grants to fund projects

JOHNSONBURG – During Tuesday's meeting of the Johnsonburg Municipal Authority board of directors, the directors discussed how they want to apply for CDBG grants to help pay for two needed projects within the borough.
Lisa Sorg, the manager of the Johnsonburg Municipal Authority, said she has been working to apply for a CDBG grant to help the authority purchase water meters for the borough, but during Tuesday's meeting, she said she has run into some problems with applying for funding to pay for the meters.

Byrnedale house destroyed in fire

BYRNEDALE – Area firefighters responded late Tuesday afternoon for a structure fire at a house in Byrnedale.
Elk Company 3 (Fox Township Fire Department), Elk Company 5 (Jay Township Fire Department) and Bennetts Valley Ambulance were called out at 3:55 p.m. to 14 Kennedy St., Byrnedale for a reported structure fire.
Initial reports indicated there was a fire on the first floor with smoke coming from the windows.

Allegheny Coatings expanding operations

Allegheny Coatings of Ridgway, also known as Diversified Coatings, is in the process of expanding its business.
At a meeting Tuesday morning, the county board of commissioners green-lighted a resolution to approve the issuance of two notes by the Elk County Industrial Development Authority in connection with the business's project.
Wayne Gerhold, a Pittsburgh-based attorney specializing in government approval work for various types of financing, including financing sponsored by the Elk County Industrial Development Authority, was on hand Tuesday to explain the requirements.

ANF officials discuss remediation efforts, invasive pests

Forest service officers continue to raise awareness on the suppression of the emerald ash borer and wooly adelgid populations throughout the Allegheny National Forest.
The emerald ash borer, an exotic wood boring beetle native to Asia, attacks all species of North American ash trees. ANF officials anticipate a "near total loss" of ash trees across the ANF as there are no "effective landscape scale treatment options" for emerald ash borer.

County clarifies position on new hire

County officials on Tuesday morning addressed repeated inquires regarding a recent hire made in the Veterans Affairs office.
Following the retirement of Jenny Richards, the former assistant in the county VA office, the board of commissioners and VA Director Leslie Neal reviewed well over 100 applications before hiring Lana Vendur.
Fred Peters, a volunteer for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and the county's Rides for Vets program, publicly questioned the hire of a non-veteran Tuesday morning toward the end of an Elk County Board of Commissioners meeting.

Roselli signs with St. Bonaventure to play men’s golf

Ridgway boys golfer Josh Roselli will be playing on the links at the collegiate level.
Roselli signed a letter of intent to attend St. Bonaventure University to play men’s golf starting next season.
The current Ridgway Area High School senior won the District 9 Class AA Individual Golf Championship in 2014 as he won a four-hole playoff at the Punxsutawney Country Club to earn the award. Roselli also helped the Elkers to a pair of District 9 Class AA team championships in 2013 and 2014.

Johnsonburg sweeps home track and field meet against Smethport

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg track and field swept Smethport in action Tuesday afternoon at Johnsonburg Area High School.
The Johnsonburg girls won 75-53 in the team meet and the boys won the team meet 99-50.

Stolburg nominated for council, police contracts approved

During Monday's Ridgway Borough Council meeting, council accepted the resignation of councilman Rich Parrish, named his replacement and approved a new contract for the Ridgway Borough Police Department.
The council first addressed Parrish's resignation, which was set to leave the council with one open seat on its seven-person council.
Parrish tendered his resignation to the borough at the end of March, and that resignation became effective April 1.

Clarion River hotbed for wildlife photos

For Bud Dippold of Ridgway, the Clarion River has served as a virtual hotbed for wildlife photos over the years.
Dippold, a longtime wildlife photographer in his own right, recently captured photos of an immature male whistling swan. The animal, with the tag “M43” around its neck, was originally tagged in Ontario, Canada.
Dippold was kayaking on the Clarion River and first saw the swan in the area of J.J. Kennedy, Inc. He tracked the swan down the river near the old railroad trestle off North Broad Street near the former Elliott Company.
