District reviews 2014, plans for 2015

The Elk County Conservation District held its first meeting of 2015 on Monday which included some review of 2014 as well as discussions looking towards the future for the district.
District manager Steve Putt reviewed the yearly program summary for 2014, which was an ongoing tally of all the permit requests that have come through the Elk County Conservation District since 2011.
Putt said the conservation district had seen a significant increase in erosion sediment control plans and general permits throughout the 2014 year.

Two St. Marys men charged in armed robbery

Two St. Marys men have been arrested and charged in connection to a home invasion and armed robbery that occurred on Jan. 7 at 119 Sunrise Rd.
Kyle Lee Sarginger, 25, and Spencer Gene Rudolph, 19, both of St. Marys, are facing multiple felony charges related to armed robbery for allegedly going to a home and robbing a woman for prescription pills.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, Rudolph kicked in the door and said, "Give me all your drugs and money" and threatened to kill the victim while brandishing a handgun.

Johnsonburg boys defeat Wolves 55-35

The Johnsonburg Rams improved to 9-9 on the season with a 55-35 win over the Kane Wolves Monday night in the Wolves’ Den. The Rams led 11-5 after one quarter. The Wolves rallied to go ahead 13-11 with three minutes left in the half but the Rams closed out the second quarter on a 10-0 run and pulled away in the fourth to get the victory.

Brockway girls basketball downs Ridgway

Brockway girls basketball used a strong fourth quarter to finish off a 55-37 win over Ridgway Monday night at Ridgway Area High School in an AML South matchup.
Brcokway led 36-28 over Ridgway after three quarters with the Lady Elkers still in striking distance. Brockway began to gradually pull away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Ridgway 17-9.

Kane wins turnover-laden game against Ramettes

JOHNSONBURG – Kane coach Dave Kiehl termed the game "sloppy" at times but his Lady Wolves rolled out of Johnsonburg in the snow Monday night with a 49-29 win, upping their record to 9-8 as they battle for favorable playoff positioning.
The Ramettes (5-12), shorthanded without two of their forwards, relied heavily on sophomore Nicole Myers as she paced all scorers with 17 points. The rest of the starting five notched just eight points while Emily Dillinger contributed two field goals off the bench.

Polar Sweet Express to benefit CAPSEA

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Fire Hall will be hosting the fifth annual Polar Sweet Express fundraiser to benefit CAPSEA, Citizens Against Physical, Sexual, and Emotional Abuse, on Saturday, Jan. 31 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The event, which is coined as a "one-stop shopping experience for all your Valentine's Day needs" will feature local vendors that can supply unique gift ideas in time for Valentine's Day, as well as a chocolate-dipping station, beer tasting, wine tastings and several prize giveaways.

Study: Longer work hours can lead to more drinking

In a recently published article in British Medical Journal, researchers say there may be a correlation between working long hours and drinking too much alcohol.
The study covered over 400,000 people and found that those who work more than 40 hours a week are more likely to overuse alcohol. The study defined risky amounts of alcohol as more than 14 drinks a week for women and more than 21 drinks a week for men.

Linda Lee Lewis (Kunes) Reams

Linda Lee Lewis (Kunes) Reams, 66, died suddenly Nov. 24, 2014 in Albuquerque, N.M.
She was born Jan. 30, 1948 and lived in Ridgway until the late 1970s. She married Dennis Kunes in June 1967 and had three daughters.
Linda was an avid collector and spent a lot of time and love in crocheting afghans for her family. She loved her dog, Maxx, and playing bingo. Linda loved the holidays, especially Christmas where she took great care in a beautiful Christmas village.

Elkers win on Jeremy Breier buzzer-beater

Ridgway's trilogy of close games this past week ended in most dramatic fashion.
Ridgway junior Jeremy Breier hit a mid-range jumper at the buzzer to give the Elkers a 30-29 win over AML South foe DuBois Central Catholic Friday night at Ridgway Area High School.
It was Ridgway's third nailbiter of the past seven days after an overtime win at Johnsonburg last Friday and overtime win hosting Curwensvville on Tuesday.

Fast start fuels ECC to 56-47 win

JOHNSONBURG – The Elk County Catholic Crusaders got off to a fast start Friday night and were able to keep the Rams at bay late in the fourth quarter to earn a 56-47 win in Johnsonburg.
Nate DaCanal led all scorers with 21 points while teammate Jeffrey Wehler finished with 11. Johnsonburg's Kevin Benson paced the Rams with 19 points, 15 of them coming in the fourth quarter.
