William James "Bill" Feronti

William James "Bill" Feronti, 67, of 210 Mill St., Johnsonburg, died Thursday evening, Jan. 8, 2015 at his residence.
He was born Aug. 21, 1947 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Charles R. Sr. and Sylvia Baptist Feronti.
He resided in Johnsonburg all his life. He graduated from Johnsonburg High School in 1965.
Mr. Feronti was a member of Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg Legion Post 501, and Central Hose Company. He was an avid music fan and was adept at playing various instruments. He was a big fan of Elvis Presley and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He will be greatly missed by all.

Big 2nd quarter lifts Elkers over Wolves

The Ridgway Elkers used a big second quarter to pull away from the Kane Wolves in boys’ basketball action in the Wolves’ Den on Friday night. The visitors led by two after one quarter but put up 17 points in the second while holding the Wolves scoreless during the quarter to take a big lead into the locker room and went on to win 47-27.

Rams unable to make up for poor 1st quarter

JOHNSONBURG – The DuBois Central Catholic Cardinals staked themselves to an early first quarter lead and were able to stave off a late rally Friday night to preserve a 49-42 win in the Paper City.
The Rams wasted a 22-point effort from Christian Cherry as Zane Hodgdon followed with nine points and Nate Burgeson chipped in six. No other Johnsonburg player had more than one field goal.

Lady Wolves defeat Lady Elkers

Kane girls basketball had plenty of chances from the foul line and took advantage of enough of them to take a 44-27 win over Ridgway Friday night at Ridgway Area High School.
Kane was 22 for 38 from the foul line while Ridgway was just 2 for 5. Ridgway didn't shoot a free throw until the second half.

JASD, RASD sports co-op expanding

JOHNSONBURG – The cooperative sports agreement between the Johnsonburg Area School District and the Ridgway Area School District will expand in the 2015-2016 school year as cross country appears to be the next sport to have a roster featuring student athletes from both districts.
The JASD school board unanimously approved a motion during Thursday's monthly meeting that approved a new cooperative sports agreement that would send JAHS students to Ridgway to compete in cross country.

Sony hack raises cyber security concerns

The November 2014 hack of Sony Pictures Entertainment has raised concerns about cyber security on a national and local level.
"I think that 90 percent of it can be protected against with knowledge," Aaron Simbeck, owner of a computer repair and consulting business in St. Marys, said. "Stay away from advertisements, use passwords, don't publish your passwords online and don't save your passwords on your computer in a text document. If you're playing games and you're getting popups, don't click them."

'If you're cold, they're cold'; bring pets inside during cold temps

The gut wrenching photos of dogs left outside in the cold circulating throughout social media and on television have helped raise awareness of proper winter pet care.
"Basically if you're cold, they're cold. They can get frostbite just like people," said Karen Cappiello, Elk County humane officer.
While some dogs are better equipped to handle the cold weather than others, the fact is that more dogs perish in the winter than at any other time of the year.
Frostbite, hypothermia and antifreeze poisoning present the biggest winter threats to pets.

Frederick J. "Fred" Schill

Frederick J. "Fred" Schill, 66, of 58 Launer Ln., Johnsonburg, died Tuesday evening, Jan. 6, 2015 at his residence following a brief illness.
He was born Feb. 2, 1948 in Kane, son of the late Ralph and Wilma Reed Schill. He married Sandra Lewis on Sept. 14, 1968 in St. Marys and she survives.
Mr. Schill resided in Johnsonburg for the past 44 years. He attended Queen of the World school.
He was a member of the VFW, Prince of Piedmont Club in Johnsonburg and Wilcox Sportsmen's Club.

Ridgway boys basketball downs scrappy Rovers

Ridgway earned a second victory in two nights but this time it was against a team that looked anything but its 1-9 record.
The Elkers defeated Brockway 41-28 Wednesday night at Ridgway Area High School to move to 10-1 on the season.
