â€śItâ€™s time for the Ridgway School Board to stop playing political games and to settle a contract with the district teachers.â€ťÂ
That is the message Wednesday from the Ridgway Area Teacherâ€™s Association in response to the school boardâ€™s vote Tuesday to reject the boardâ€™s own contract proposal, according to RATA.
ST. MARYS â€“ Elk County Catholic alumnus Ryan Jacobs and fellow Penn State students will be "canning" this weekend in town for THON, the largest student philanthropy effort in the world.
According to THON.org, "the mission of the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon is to conquer pediatric cancer by providing outstanding emotional and financial support to the children, families, researchers, and staff of the Four Diamonds Fund."
During Tuesday's workshop session of the Ridgway Area School District School Board, Board President Lisa Connelly delivered a prepared speech in response to advertisements and statements made by the Ridgway Area Teachers Association.
With a high-profile governor's race on the ballot, Elk County had a high voter turnout with 44.35 percent of the registered voters coming out to vote.
York County businessman Tom Wolf ousted incumbent Republican Governor Tom Corbett soundly Tuesday. The Democrat could not carry Elk County, however, as Corbett got 4,420 votes to Wolf's 4,115. There were 31 write-in votes as well. Pennsylvania law was changed in 1968 to allow for consecutive gubernatorial terms. Corbett is the first Pennsylvania governor to be denied re-election since the law was changed.
The Ridgway varsity volleyball team was honored with a banquet Tuesday night at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
Ridgway varsity head coach Janet Redmond handed out awards and named Bridgette Woodford as the teamâ€™s MVP.

JV head coach Robin Barclay expressed appreciation to her family and spoke about the life lessons to be taught with sports.
"We started out the season with five sophomores, five freshman and two juniors," Barclay said. "I believe sports can teach some real life lessons. As coaches, Janet and I try to highlight those as they come up."
COCHRANTON â€“ The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders saw their season come to an end with a 3-0 loss to the Maplewood Lady Tigers in the opening round of the PIAA Class A volleyball playoffs. A number of parents and fans also made the trek to Cochranton High School to cheer on the Lady Crusaders.

Tom Corbett, NBC projected, Pennsylvania Democratic businessman Tom Wolf has unseated the stateâ€™s Republican governor. 65-year-old Wolf, poured his personal fortune into the race and hammered the governor over declining education spending. Corbett, also 65 and a blunt former prosecutor, trailed Wolf badly in most pre-election polls.

The Ridgway soccer programs were honored with a banquet Monday night at the Ridgway Area High School cafeteria.
The boys soccer, girls soccer and junior high soccer programs were all honored. Each team had a scholar-athlete award recipient. The boys soccer scholar-athlete was Bryce Dias and the girls soccer scholar-athlete award winner was Rachel Smith. The junior high soccer scholar-athlete award winner was Anna Cristini.
