July 18, 2014

Walter Joseph Zawacki, 91, of Bluefield, Va., died Wednesday, July 16, 2014.
He was born Nov. 24, 1922 in Ridgway.
As a child growing up during the Great Depression, Walter and his brother Alex picked berries and evergreens to help supplement the family income. Walter played football in high school and was known as “Freight Train.” As a proud first generation Polish American he served our country during WWII aboard the aircraft repair ship The Major General Robert Olds.

Drug busts yield 4 suspects, bath salts, currency

ST. MARYS – Four individuals were taken into custody on Thursday as a result of a dual drug bust in St. Marys and Ridgway.
Approximately 80 grams of bath salts and in excess of $30,000 in cash were seized in Ridgway with approximately 50 grams of bath salts and $6,000 in cash seized in St. Marys.
Multiple law enforcement agencies worked together in executing the search warrants served at 312 Chestnut Ave. in Ridgway Borough shortly after 9:30 a.m. and at 325 Kaul Ave. in St. Marys shortly before noon due to coordination efforts.

Borough approves timber bid

The Ridgway Borough Council approved a bid for timber sales during a special meeting held Thursday afternoon.
The area in question is located along Water Works Road near the reservoir and is roughly the size of a nearby area being cut by Kane Hardwoods which contains approximately 500 oak and cherry trees.

Jury: Pisani guilty on all counts

After approximately three hours of deliberation Thursday, the jury returned a verdict in the trial of Edward J. Pisani, 59, of Johnsonburg.

AP source: Missile took down jet in Ukraine

WASHINGTON (AP) — American intelligence authorities believe a surface-to-air missile took down a passenger jet in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, a U.S. official said, but the Obama administration was still scrambling to confirm who launched the strike and whether there were American citizens killed in the crash.

Vice President Joe Biden said the incident was "not an accident" and described the Malaysia Airlines plane as having been "blown out of the sky."

Commissioners grant RVFD training equipment

The Elk County Commissioners recently provided the Ridgway Volunteer Fire Department with a grant totaling just under $10,000 for a new BullEx Intelligent Training System which will aid in public education concerning fire extinguisher use. The training system is reportedly the only of its kind being utilized in this area of Pennsylvania.
"We are so, so grateful for this," said RVFD member Ray Imhof.
The grant from the county was made available through Act 13 funding.

Ridgway man jailed on burglary charges

JOHNSONBURG – A Ridgway man faces multiple charges in a burglary incident that occurred on July 7 around 8:31 p.m.
Theodore Carlson, 18, of 136 Sherman Ave., Ridgway, was questioned by police when Carlson, William Gnan and three juveniles were observed near Buehler Lumber along 260 W. Main St. in Ridgway. Carlson was asked to empty his pockets and was found to be in possession of a folding type ruler. According to the affidavit of probable cause, Carlson made incriminating statements about being in the Buehler Lumber building and removing the ruler from the building.

Ridgway golfers faring well in Penn-York Junior Golf League

Ridgway golfers have been faring well this summer in the Penn-York Junior Golf League.
Josh Roselli has three top-5 finishes so far and TJ Schlimm has finished in the top 10 twice. Nick Simon has been a 2-time winner this season and Ben Ames has two top-5 finishes.

Reported drilling plans draw ire

Initial plans by a local drilling company to establish a Marcellus Shale gas well drilling pad in Spring Creek Township have already been met with extreme opposition.
The land in question, located along Spring Creek Road, involves parcels reportedly owned by Shirley Melego and land in the national forest system.
