Johnsonburg track and field hosts tri-meet

The Elk County Catholic track and field teams competed in a tri-meet at Johnsonburg with Kane on Tuesday afternoon.
In the girls meet, ECC won with 92 points followed by Kane with 42 and Johnsonburg with 39.
In the boys meet, Kane won with 88 points followed by ECC with 50 and Johnsonburg 48.

Borough considering options for Ridgway's parks

The Ridgway Borough Council's planning, grants and recreation committee met Monday at 4 p.m. at the Ridgway Borough municipal building to discuss the status of the borough's various parks, including the much talked about skatepark.
Monday's committee meeting was the first meeting held by borough officials since they received official notice from YMCA officials that the lease between the borough and the YMCA that allowed the borough to house a skatepark on YMCA property had been terminated.

Johnsonburg baseball uses strong pitching for 5-2 win over Kane

WILCOX – Johnsonburg baseball defeated Kane for the third time in five days as the Rams defeated the Wolves 5-2 Monday afternoon at Jones Township Community Park in Wilcox.
Although the Rams picked up the win, Johnsonburg coach Jeff Peterson said he was not pleased with the way the Rams hit the ball against Kane.

Plane strikes building after failed startup

ST. MARYS – A small plane veered out of control upon startup striking a portion of a building Sunday afternoon at the St. Marys Municipal Airport.
A pilot and his passenger escaped with only minor injuries.
The incident occurred as pilot Preston Hoopes of Ulysses in Potter County was reportedly having difficulty starting his plane. He reported to Alan McPherson, airport manager, that he exited the plane to slightly move the propellor which he said suddenly started although the key in the ignition was turned to the off position as was the master switch.

National Day of Prayer set for Thursday

Area residents will pause to reflect Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. for the annual National Day of Prayer event at the Courthouse Gazebo in downtown Ridgway.

St. Marys Lady Dutch win County Tournament title over ECC

JOHNSONBURG – It was fitting that a long day at Knothole Park was made a little longer by extra innings.
St. Marys didn't mind playing the extra two innings.
The Lady Dutch scored two runs in the ninth inning to win 4-2 over Elk County Catholic in the Elk County Softball Tournament championship game Friday night at Knothole Park in Johnsonburg.

St. Marys Area rallies for 5-3 win over Rams

ST. MARYS – The Johnsonburg Rams went into the seventh inning of Friday's opening round game in the Elk County Baseball Tournament leading St. Marys Area 3-2 and needing just three outs to advance to today's title game. They got them, but not before the Dutchmen were able to score three runs to rally for a 5-3 victory.

Ridgway armory may become a community center

Citing a desire to fulfill community wishes for a kids' community center, FOTRA, LLC plans to turn the armory building in Ridgway into a community center and theater after the sale of the building is finalized with the state.
The owners of FOTRA (Friends of the Ridgway Armory), Dave Leske and Staci Johnson-Leske, spoke to The Ridgway Record on Friday about their decision to place a bid with the state and their goals for the future of the building.

Bureau of Forestry warns of fire danger as springtime emerges

It is spring fire season once again and the fire danger has been increasing and may become high or extreme as we move through spring, according to Bureau of Forestry officials at the Elk State Forest.
Officials advise residents to check the Smokey Bear fire danger rating signs throughout the area.
The sign was listed as "moderate" Friday afternoon in Ridgway Township.
The Bureau of Forestry would like to remind residents to be careful with fire. Whether residents are burning trash or yard debris, officials advise residents to take the time to think before lighting the fire.
