Supporting the fight against texting and driving

Imagine attempting to keep a vehicle safely on the road while driving blindfolded for five seconds at 55 miles per hour. In addition, by this time a driver has covered an area slightly longer than a football field.What may sound like a challenge to some is a risk drivers take everyday when reading or sending a text message.
One local business owner is hoping to raise awareness to the dangers of texting and driving through participation in the Red Thumb Reminder project, encouraging drivers to paint their thumb nail red or wear a red band or string around their finger.

Crusaders edge Elkers 47-46 for AML championship

ST. MARYS — Elk County Catholic’s Nate DaCanal’s field goal with seconds left gave the Elk County Catholic Crusaders a hard fought 47-46 win over the Ridgway Elkers Saturday night in the Allegheny Mountain League championship played at the St. Marys Area High School.

Lady Crusaders win fourth straight AML title

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders won their fourth straight girls’ Allegheny Mountain League title Saturday night when they defeated the DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals 49-30 in the title game played at the St. Marys Area High School.

Hoffman takes all-around title at League Championships

Ridgway freshman Hailey Hoffman won the all-around championship at the League Championships held Friday night at DuBois Area High School.
Hoffman won the all-around with a score of 33.425. Hoffman was also the uneven bars champion with a score of 8.725. Hoffman finished sixth in vault with a score of 8.35 and was ninth on balance beam with a 7.6.

Elizabeth Jane Erickson

Elizabeth Jane Erickson, 65, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2015 after a gutsy battle with lung disease.
Betsy was born to Walter "Baldy" and Agnes Foster Bouse on Nov. 25, 1949, their fourth child. On Aug. 18, 1972, she married John Erickson of Johnsonburg and they resided in Ridgway all their married life.

Kathleen Ann Penfield

Kathleen Ann Penfield, 63, of 236 Walnut St., Ridgway, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2015 at Highland View Health Care in Brockway.
She was born March 13, 1951 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Herbert and Marion Mitchell Fannin. On April 28, 1973, she married William R. Penfield Jr., who survives.
She had lived in Ridgway all her life. She had been employed at St. Marys Carbon for 31 years. She was a graduate of Ridgway Area High School Class of 1970. Kathy enjoyed cooking, sewing, knitting, crocheting and scrapbooking.

Wreck at Rite Aid in St. Marys

ST. MARYS – Elk Company 1 (Crystal Fire Department), St. Marys Ambulance and St. Marys Police responded shortly after 3 p.m. Friday to a two-vehicle crash in the Rite Aid parking lot along the Million Dollar Highway in St. Marys. A public information release report was unavailable at press time but St. Marys Police confirmed a patron was exiting the business Friday afternoon and struck an unattended Ford F150 pickup truck and a large business sign located on the property.

Ridgway advances to AML championship game

Ridgway boys basketball advanced to the AML championship game with a 34-26 victory over Johnsonburg Friday night at Ridgway Area High School in an AML semifinal matchup.
"It was tough. It was about what we thought it would be, low-scoring," Ridgway coach Anthony Allegretto said. "We're a patient team and when they pack in that zone, that zone's hard to attack. Coach Shuey has them much more under control. Early in the season, he had some guys out gambling at times. Now it's hard to find anything."

JASD denies recorded 'bankrupt' comments

JOHNSONBURG – At Thursday's Johnsonburg Area School District School Board meeting, school board member Richard "Louie" Wolfe denied that the term "bankruptcy" was ever used at a Jan. 21 JASD budget workshop, despite the word "bankrupt" being recorded by The Ridgway Record.
Wolfe made the claim after board members were asked about the district's financial situation, which has become a hot topic for the community since the most recent JASD budget workshop, according to Jason Pratt, a concerned parent that questioned the board about the district's financial status.
