JOHNSONBURG â€“ On Friday morning accused murderer Nicholas Martin of Johnsonburg, charged in the killing of his 18-year-old girlfriend Alyssa Forsyth of Ridgway, appeared in front of Elk County President Judge Richard Masson as part of a pre-trial hearing.
JOHNSONBURG â€“Â Elk Company 2 (Johnsonburg) and St. Marys Ambulance responded Friday at 6:12 p.m. to a vehicle fire at 214 Hickory St. in Johnsonburg.
The vehicle was reportedly inside a structure and on fire; initial reports indicated the possibility of three victims with burn wounds. A helicopter was requested at 6:26 p.m. to the landing zone at Elk Regional Health Center [ERHC] however unfavorable weather conditions prevented the chopper from flying in. Ridgway Ambulance also was dispatched to the scene.
ST. MARYS â€“ The 24 athletes named to the All-Tournament teams at the upcoming EQT Energy Classic Elk County Holiday Tournament will each receive a special brass medallion to commemorate the occasion, something in which the students in the drafting and Metal Working Occupations (MWO) students at St. Marys Area can take special pride. Instead of ordering the medallions from an outside source, St. Marys Area High School, the main host school for the tournament, turned to those students and asked them to take on the project.
Ridgway boys basketball extended their winning streak to four with a 58-49 victory over Central Mountain Friday night at Ridgway Area High School.
Ridgway coach Anthony Allegretto looked at this game with the Wildcats with some concern as Central Mountain is a Quad-A school in boys basketball.
"They're so physical and I knew they were going to be physical coming in and they always have shooters," Allegretto said.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ Area firefighters responded to a fire shortly after 12:30 a.m. early Friday morning in the 200 block of Blaine Avenue in Johnsonburg.
The call came in at 12:33 a.m. to 204 Blaine Ave., a residence situated on a borough road running parallel to the state Route 219 bypass.
Elk Company 2 (Johnsonburg) and St. Marys Ambulance were called at 12:33 a.m.; Elk Company 1 (Crystal Fire Department out of St. Marys), Elk Company 4 (Ridgway), Elk Company 6 (Wilcox) were called out at 12:44 a.m., and Elk Company 5 (Jay Township) responded at 1 a.m.
ST. MARYS â€“ The St. Marys City Police Department reports investigating a two-vehicle collision that occurred on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at approximately 10:10 p.m. on SR 255/S. St. Marys Street near Jeep Road.
Police report that a 2013 BMW sedan, operated by Shanti Raju, 34, of St. Marys, was traveling northbound in the right lane. A 2012 Chevrolet pickup truck, operated by James Dunshie, 26, of Force was traveling northbound in the left lane. The Chevrolet had three other passengers: Tiffany Potts, 29, of Johnsonburg, Amanda Sidelinger, 25, of Weedville and Rachelle Goetz, 21, of Weedville.
The Ridgway-Elk County Chamber of Commerce is gearing up to start their â€śFirst Fridaysâ€ť campaign again beginning in January of 2014. The chamber will be sponsoring events on the first Friday of each month in 2014 in order to help support area business and promote their goal of "shop local."
ST. MARYS â€“ Bishop Lawrence T. Persico of the Diocese of Erie, the Board of Members, and the Board of Directors of the Elk County Catholic School System are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Sam MacDonald to the position of president for ECCSS.
Ralph A. Gasbarre, 78, of 112 Cushing Ave., Johnsonburg, died Wednesday night, Dec. 18, 2013 at Elk Haven Nursing Home in St. Marys following a lengthy illness.
He was born May 20, 1935 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Sabatino and Elizabeth Mangine Gasbarre.
On July 2, 1960 in Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg, he married Mary Bliss and she survives.
A lifelong Johnsonburg resident, he attended Johnsonburg public schools, and was a member of Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg.
Carolyn Sue McDaniels, 76, of 12 Short St., Ridgway, died early Thursday morning, Dec. 19, 2013 at Pinecrest Manor following a lengthy illness.
She was born Oct. 28, 1937, in Kane, daughter of the late Edwin K. and Sybil L. (Pytcher) Galbreath. She married Patrick D. McDaniels on July 18, 1958; he survives. She had resided in Ridgway for most of her life and was a graduate of the Ridgway High School.
Sue was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. She had been employed by the Ridgway Area School District for 35 years.
