Evidence suppression hearing held in 6-fatality court case

SMETHPORT – A court hearing was held Friday on defense motions to suppress certain evidence in the criminal case linked with a horrific 6-fatality traffic accident a year ago.
Kathy Douglas of Kane faces 35 charges for allegedly abusing prescription medicine (Clonazepam) when she drove one of two vehicles involved in the near head-on collision on Route 219 just north of Lantz Corners in Hamlin Township.

Gerg gets first win as Crusaders shut out Falcons

COUDERSPORT – Despite the best efforts of the Crusader football team, there was one objective they were unable to accomplish on Friday night: successfully dumping a bucket of ice on head coach Tony Gerg in celebration of his first coaching victory. Everything else seemed to go the team's way though as they romped to a 32-0 shutout over the Coudersport Falcons in a contest played under the lights at C.A.R.P. Park in Coudersport.

Ridgway boys golf downs Brockway

Ridgway boys golf remained undefeated on the season with a 196-251 win over Brockway Thursday afternoon.
Ridgway was led by overall medalist Josh Roselli with a 36. TJ Schlimm finished with a 38 and Ben Ames carded a 39.

Groundbreaking held at new housing project

The groundbreaking for the Village at Ridgmont, a new 20 home affordable housing neighborhood for the elderly to be constructed in Ridgway, was held on Thursday.
The neighborhood will be constructed directly behind Ridgmont personal care community on Ridgmont Drive.

Robbery suspect apprehended by police

August 29, 2014

The St. Marys City Police reported Thursday that Dustin Allen Courteau, 26, of St. Marys, wanted for a home invasion and strong arm robbery, has been apprehended.
According to a police report, police responded to a reported sighting of Courteau on East Joseph Road just after 7 a.m. Thursday morning. Courteau was apprehended without incident on West Oilwell Street by State Police Troopers, who assisted in the search.

James Woodburn and Helen Louise Hutchinson Woodburn

A joint graveside service and interment for James Woodburn, 91, formerly of Franklin and Helen Hutchinson Woodburn, 91, formerly of Ridgway will take place at 11 a.m. Sunday, at Franklin Cemetery. In honor of Mr. Woodburn’s service to his country, full military burial rites will be accorded by the V.E.T.S. Funeral Honor Guard of Franklin.

Quality of work force is topic of discussion for North Central

The North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission met Wednesday morning and the quality of the area's workforce was a main point of discussion for the attending committee members.
The discussion centered around a growing problem in the area, employers are looking for employees, but many available employees are not able to pass a drug test to gain employment.
"This issue is a cultural and societal issue," Executive Director Eric Bridges said during the meeting. "There is a potential demonization of people that suffer from these diseases."

Louis Richard “Gigi” Notarianni

Louis Richard “Gigi” Notarianni, 81, of Powers Avenue, Johnsonburg, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2014 at Pinecrest Manor after a short illness.
He was born Sept. 8, 1932 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Victor and Jean (Victor) Notarianni.
Mr. Notarianni married Carol Catherine (Baum) on April 20, 1963 in Holy Rosary Church. She preceded him in death on Nov. 24, 2006.
Following his Johnsonburg High School graduation he continued his education for four years at Gannon University.

Elk Co. Solid Waste Authority discusses new recycling options

The Elk County Solid Waste Authority held their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in the Courthouse Annex building in Ridgway to further discuss plans for a new recycling facility, as well as new recycling options in the county.

Three charged, one wanted in robbery

Three St. Marys residents are charged in a robbery and theft that allegedly occurred on Friday, Aug. 22 at around 9 p.m. at 430 N. St. Marys St.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, the victim reported that four individuals wearing black clothing with their faces covered entered his apartment through the back door that was open. An investigation led to the arrests of Andrew Krewduk, 24, Faith Gagliardi, 21 and Savannah Satterwhite, 47.
