Democrats hope for better result in 2014

BENEZETTE – The first ever Elk Country Multi-County Democratic picnic was celebrated Saturday afternoon at the Dudley Farm in Benezette.
The event, sponsored by the Elk County Democratic Committee, featured addresses from several state and federal candidates.

Wilcox Legion stays alive in playoffs

WILCOX – With elimination in the cards with a loss, Wilcox picked a good time to put a decisive effort together.
A seven-run first inning was followed by more timely hitting as Wilcox was able to cruise to an 11-0 win over Fox Township Friday evening at Jones Township Community Park in an elimination game in the Elk County American Legion League playoffs.

William J. "Bill" Grabofski

William J. "Bill" Grabofski, 88, of Erie, died Thursday, July 10, 2014 at St. Vincent Health Center.
He was born Aug. 6, 1925, in Johnsonburg, son of the late Herman and Helen Koppitch Grabofski. He was a former resident of Chelsea Avenue in Erie, and Johnsonburg.

Wilcox Legion falls to Bradford in playoffs

WILCOX – After Wilcox's opening playoff win Wednesday night, Wilcox coach Frank Ferragine said he knew the team needed to be more consistent with hitting and making the most of good opportunities.
Once again, neither happened for Wilcox and this time it led to a defeat.
Wilcox stranded eight runners on base over the first six innings and couldn't overcome timely hitting from Bradford as the Bradford Legion team won 8-2 over Wilcox Thursday evening at Jones Township Community Park.

Benezette man charged in stabbing incident

ST. MARYS – Multiple charges have been filed against David J. Charles II, 22, of Benezette, who led police on a foot chase before being apprehended Tuesday.

RASD approves new staff members

The Ridgway Area School District Board of Directors approved several new additions to their staff during a special meeting held Thursday evening. Two additional special education teachers were approved following an executive session.

Wilcox American Legion wins playoff opener

WILCOX – Wilcox made sure their huge first inning was good enough for an opening victory in the American Legion playoffs.
Wilcox sent 14 to the plate and scored 10 runs en route to a 10-5 victory over Mt. Jewett Wednesday evening in the first round of the Elk County American Legion playoffs.

McMillen held for court in contraband case

JOHNSONBURG – A preliminary hearing was held Wednesday before Magisterial District Judge George A. King for an inmate of Elk County Prison charged with possession of contraband or controlled substances in the prison.

Supervisors looking to draft quality of life ordinance

BROCKPORT – The Horton Township Board of Supervisors has been busy drafting a new quality of life ordinance which has undergone some revisions as of the June meeting.
The proposed ordinance establishes "protection districts" which include the "wellhead and watershed protected areas in the township" and seeks to prohibit "certain land uses/activities in the protection districts" and impose "special requirements for all land uses/activities in protection districts," including oil and gas drilling outfits.
