Surra to head Fish and Game review team

It was recently announced that Governor-Elect Tom Wolf selected a variety of individuals from across the state to head transition review teams that will be tasked with examining various agencies, policies, and issues in an effort to aid him in starting off his first term as governor as effectively as possible. Among those individuals was Kersey resident Dan Surra, who will head the Fish and Game review team.

Jury: Weidow guilty in vehicular homicide

A jury found Brandon Michael Weidow guilty of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence and related offenses for his involvement in the 2012 one-vehicle crash that claimed the life of Savannah Straub.

Lady Elkers unable to close gap in thriller

Despite two playmakers in foul trouble, the Ridgway Lady Elkers ran off a furious second-half rally Friday night only to fall just short in a 42-36 loss against the Curwensville Lady Tide.
The home team got a 13-point night from Emily Fullem and 12 points from Jessica Kifer, but the Lady Elkers were unable to "turn the Tide" against Curwensville after a 24-14 halftime deficit.

Coudersport edges Kane at Tip-Off Tournament

JOHNSONBURG – A runaway defeat turned into a victory for Coudersport girls basketball Friday night.
Coudersport rallied from a 16-4 first-quarter deficit to take a 44-43 win over Kane at the Johnsonburg Tip-Off Tournament at Johnsonburg Area High School.
Emily Morey hit a short jumper with eight seconds left to put the Lady Falcons ahead. Kane had one final chance but could not get a fluent possession together and did not get a possible game-winning shot off in time.

RATA contract made public

The Ridgway Area School District has released the recently approved contract with the Ridgway Area Teachers Association, a contract that includes a $500 one-time signing bonus, but no retroactive pay raises.
The school board voted to approve the contract during a special meeting Wednesday, and board president Lisa Connelly said that the contract would be available after the two sides had signed the agreement.

Split vote approves tax increase

Following a narrow 4-3 vote by the Ridgway Borough council, a new budget has been tentatively approved for 2015.
The approved 2015 budget includes a one mill tax increase, which will be placed in the borough's general purposes account.
"What we did in the budget for 2015, we increased it by one mill, and got us out of the $27,000 deficit, into a net balance of $7,615 for 2015," said Kim Zimmerman, Ridgway Borough manager.

Second trial begins in Weidow case

The second trial for Brandon Michael Weidow, 26, of Byrnedale, began Wednesday morning.
Weidow is facing felony charges of homicide by vehicle and homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence for his alleged involvement in a 2012 vehicle crash that killed Savannah Straub.

Ridgway boys basketball downs Port Allegany to open 3-0

Foul trouble kept Jeremy Breier from having much success or seeing much playing time in the first half.
The second half was a different story.
Breier scored 18 of his game-high 24 points for Ridgway boys basketball in the second half as Ridgway moved to 3-0 with a 55-26 win over Port Allegany Wednesday night at Ridgway Area High School.

ECC Lady Crusaders earn solid 55-22 win over Johnsonburg Ramettes

JOHNSONBURG – Elk County Catholic had solid scoring all around Wednesday night in a 55-22 rout over the Johnsonburg Ramettes.
The Lady Crusaders were led by Reilly Herzing and Nicole Schneider as they came off the bench to score 11 and eight points, respectively. Four Lady Crusaders scored at least seven points in the win.
