Tax increases discussed during budget workshop

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Borough Council held a budget workshop on Wednesday in the Johnsonburg Borough building to start to discuss the budget which needs to be established for next year.
Among the heavily discussed items were the purchase of a new police vehicle, community improvement in the form of grass cutting for properties in the borough that aren't maintained, and the hiring of several new employees in the borough.

John E. Zook

John E. Zook, 77, of 307  W. Hemlock Ave., Kane, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014 at UPMC Hamot in Erie.
Born Sept. 11, 1936, in Kane, he was a son of the late John E. and Ruth Gilbert Zook. On Dec. 26, 1959 in Kane, he married Sandra Orcutt who survives.
John, a well-known Kane businessman, was the owner of Zook Motors which is one of Kane's oldest businesses. He was very active and  community-minded and was always there to help or give to the community in so many different ways. Zook Motors could always be counted on when a cause was at hand and money had to be raised. 

Doris J. "Dorie" McAlee

Doris J. "Dorie" McAlee, 84, of 627 First Ave., Johnsonburg, died Tuesday night, Aug. 19, 2014 at her residence following an illness of the past three years.
She was born June 29, 1930 in Oil City, daughter of the late James Kane and Grace Gier Kane Cyone.
On Jan. 29, 1949, she married Edward A. McAlee in St. Leo Magnus Church, Ridgway, and he survives.
She resided in Johnsonburg for the past 66 years and was formerly of Ridgway.
She was a 1947 graduate of Ridgway Area High School.

Ernest G. Ellery

Ernest G. Ellery, 76, of Ridgway, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2014 at the U.P.M.C. Shady Side Hospital in Pittsburgh.
He was born in Brockton, son of the late Ralph and Mildred (Ames) Ellery. He was raised and educated in Rockland graduating from Rockland High School.
Mr. Ellery was a proud veteran of the Armed Services, serving in both the U.S. Navy, and the U.S. Air Force. He later went to work for many years as a manager for Verizon. Ernest was a member of the National Rifle Association, the Pennsylvania Rifle and Pistol Association, and the Ridgway Rifle Club.

Copper bags another drug charge

ST. MARYS – Andrew Thomas Hoover, 29, of St. Marys is charged with possession of controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.
Based on suspicious activity, Sgt. Shaffer of the St. Marys Police Department deployed the K9 narcotic detection dog, Copper, who led police to find two clear fentanyl patches and a clear ziplock bag that contained glassine packets typically used for packaging heroin.

Sheriff Krieg announces upcoming retirement

The Elk County Courthouse will see a shift as 2014 winds down as two-term Elk County Sheriff Jeff Krieg will not serve out his final year at the helm and will instead retire.
Krieg's decision, kept largely under wraps for the duration of the year, was initially made as far back as January.

Sheriff's department under 'investigation'

County officials are reportedly filing right-to-know requests with various local police departments to track down the amount of hours worked by full-time and part-time Elk County Sheriff's deputies.
For years it has been common practice for full-time and part-time sheriff's deputies to also work for local police forces.
The requests, however, have caused grave concerns with the county's sheriff's department, mainly due to the negative implications that an investigation demands.

Mayors association revisits May flooding

St. Marys Mayor Bob Howard, speaking on behalf of the Elk County Mayors Association, addressed the board of commissioners Tuesday morning regarding the May 21 flooding that devastated parts of Elk County.
"The flood happened so fast and I don't think anyone was really prepared," Howard said. "I know we weren't [ready] but at the same time, St. Marys did not receive anywhere near as much damage as Ridgway did. I've tried to look into exactly what happened and why it was such a tragedy for our area, especially for Ridgway."

Paul J. Francis, 84, of Brockport, formerly of Ridgway, died peaceful with his wife by his side Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Maureen; stepchildren Ann (Jim) Griffin, Brendan (Karen) Johnson, and Kathleen Johnson; brothers Thomas and Raymond Francis; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
There will be no prior calling hours. A graveside service was held in Garland Cemetery. Those wishing may contribute to Lifetime Care Hospice, Rochester, N.Y. in Paul's memory.

Esther Kathryn Sicheri

Esther Kathryn Sicheri, 93, of Twinridge Lane, Richmond, Va., formerly of Kersey, died Aug. 6, 2014.
She was born Nov. 9, 1920, in Kersey, the daughter of the late John and Teresa Lavella Astori. On Aug. 2, 1947, she married Gustav Sicheri who preceded her in death in 2003.
