Vacant building to be condemned

One building in downtown Ridgway sustained heavy structural damage as a result of the May 21 flood. The former Rohr Upholstering building, located along North Broad Street, saw the washing out of much of the foundation from the overflow of Elk Creek.

Ridgway man pleads guilty to possessing gun in Kane

SMETHPORT – A Ridgway man has pleaded guilty to a felony charge of illegally possessing a handgun in Kane in 2013.
William Aaron Fourness Jr., 25, entered the plea Tuesday in McKean County Court in Smethport.
Under a plea agreement, six other charges have been dismissed. These charges include possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, two charges related to driving under the influence (DUI) of a controlled substance and operating a red 2009 Subaru with a cracked windshield.

2 jailed after suspected 'bath salts' found in car

KANE – Kane Police found a cache of suspected "bath salts" in a vehicle searched late Sunday afternoon in the borough.
Two arrests have been made in connection with the discovery.
The defendants are Scott Alan Yanak, 34, of Moon Township near Pittsburgh and Lori Lee Grotzinger, 30, of 318 Ash St., St. Marys.

Couple in child-starving case cancel restitution challenge

SMETHPORT – A Mt. Jewett couple jailed on child-starving charges have withdrawn their post-sentencing motions that seek a reduction in the restitution they owe.
Mark and Susan Hooper of 21 Anderson St., Mt. Jewett, were sentenced to county jail April 8 after pleading “no contest” to charges filed last year by State Police Trooper Mary Gausman.

Crusaders come up short in state title bid

STATE COLLEGE – One step made all the difference in the Elk County Catholic Crusaders winning the PIAA Class A Baseball Championship 2-1 in regulation and losing it 2-1 to Devon Prep in extra innings.
Senior Vincent Jacob led off the first inning with a double, went to third on a wild pitch, and came home as Ivan Wortman flied out for the second out of the inning. Jacob's run appeared to give the Crusaders an early lead, but Devon Prep checked to see if he had left early, and the umpires ruled that he had, negating the run and resulting in the third out for Elk Catholic.

Richard A. Simchick, 70, of 1625 Bendigo Rd., Johnsonburg, died Thursday evening, June 12, 2014 at West Penn Hospital, Forbes Hospice, Pittsburgh following a lengthy illness.
He was born June 26, 1943 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Francis and Eleanor Przybylski Simchick.
On Jan. 29, 1966 in Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg, he married Georgiana Cherry, who preceded him in death Jan. 23, 2013.
He resided in Johnsonburg all his life and graduated from Johnsonburg High School in 1961.

Elk County Boulder Dash upcoming

The Elk County Boulder Dash, a 20-mile run, walk or hike event is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 9 at 8 a.m. starting at the firemen's carnival grounds along North Broad Street in downtown Ridgway.
The event takes place on 20 miles of State Game Lands 44, just south of Ridgway, featuring about 4,000 feet of vertical rise over the course. The deadline to register online at www.elkcountyboulderdash.com is Friday, Aug. 1.

School board approves several items

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Area School Board of Directors approved several items on Tuesday evening's agenda including the appointment of a new girls varsity basketball coach. The position will be filled by Ellie Kocjancic, last year's junior varsity coach.
The board also moved to reappoint Emily Mitchell as the school's athletic director.
Both motions were approved unanimously.
Jim Grumley was approved to move from a sixth grade teacher to fifth grade, and Judy Redmond was approved to move from grade five to grade four.
Both transfers were described as "voluntary."

Francesca Salerno

Francesca Salerno, 92, of 203 Clarion Rd., Johnsonburg, died Wednesday night, June 11, 2014 at Elk Haven Nursing Home in St. Marys following a year-long illness.
She was born Nov. 17, 1921 in Nicosea, Sicily, daughter of Frank and Maria Camerano Costanzo. On Sept. 14, 1955, she married Anthony Salerno, who preceded her in death on March 30, 2005.
She resided in Johnsonburg from the time of her marriage. She attended school in Sicily. She was a member of the Holy Rosary Church and enjoyed spending time at home with her family.

Wilcox Legion falls to Smethport

WILCOX – The Wilcox American Legion team hopes there isn't another night like Wednesday this season.
Smethport blew open an early lead with an eight-run fifth inning as Smethport won 14-0 over Wilcox in five innings at Jones Township Community Park in American Legion baseball action.
