Thomas G. "Tom" Zelechoski Sr.

Thomas G. "Tom" Zelechoski Sr., 92, of 402 Willow St., Johnsonburg, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 16, 2014 at his residence following a brief illness.
He was born Feb. 12, 1922 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Michael and Winifred Muroski Zelechoski.
On Feb. 7, 1948, he married Irene Parana in Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg. She preceded him in death July 28, 2008.
He resided in Johnsonburg all his life. He graduated from Johnsonburg High School in 1939 and attended college briefly in California.

Roger N. Smith

Roger N. Smith, 46, of Byrnedale, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2014 at Penn Highlands Elk in St. Marys.
He was born Aug. 2, 1968 in Buckhannon, W. Va., son of Robert and Delena Smith.
On Aug. 14, 1999, he married Tammy (Benson) Smith.
He had been employed as a die setter at Eastern Sintered Alloy since 1998. He enjoyed hunting and racing, being a member of the pit crew for BMC Racing and a member of the B&S Tractor Pulling Team.
He lived in West Virginia until coming to Johnsonburg in 1998 and then to Byrnedale in 2001.

According to Google, which released a report Tuesday on the top trending terms of the year, the top term overall was "Robin Williams," after the well-known and popular comedian died in August. No. 2 was "World Cup," the global soccer tournament held in Brazil in June. Third on the list was "Ebola," the highly contagious virus.

Elinski pin caps off Johnsonburg home dual with Rovers

JOHNSONBURG – Although the Rams lost in the team aspect, Johnsonburg ended the night on a positive note.
A Joey Elinski pin would give the Johnsonburg grapplers its lone win on the mat during a 55-12 win over Brockway Tuesday night at Johnsonburg Area High School.

New recycling center could be on horizon

The Solid Waste Authority has received county approval for the purchase of land at the corner of Ceramic and Stackpole streets in St. Marys for the building of a new recycling center.
"We're out of room at our current location," said Bekki Titchner, recycling and solid waste coordinator for Elk County. "The building is old and has served its purpose. We couldn't have done this with any other organization because we were able to get the property at a very cheap rental fee.

Shorthanded Big Brothers Big Sisters looking for matches

The Big Brothers Big Sisters program in Elk County is currently in dire straits as 19 youngsters are waiting for a volunteer Big Brother or Big Sister match.
"If we don't find matches for those kids, that's a big opportunity missed," said Cinde Schuckers, a program coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters. "Recruitment definitely is one of our areas for concern and we are always looking for new ways to recruit and the avenues to reach out to."
The county currently has 18 volunteer "Bigs" matched with a "Little," but 19 area youth are still waiting.

Borough manager contract approved

Ridgway Borough manager Kim Zimmerman has received a new contract from the Ridgway Borough following a 5-2 vote made by the Ridgway Borough Council.
Zimmerman was in need of a new contract if he was to continue as the borough’s manager, following the expiration of his previous contract Oct. 15.
Although it had expired and he had not been offered a new contract, Zimmerman had been working under the terms of his expired contract from Oct. 15 until the council approved a new contract Monday.

Supervisors moving forward with zoning

Looking into the future, the Ridgway Township Supervisors are working on updating the township's zoning map and zoning ordinances, specifically an ordinance that addresses the oil and gas industry.
The oil and gas industry presence has been increasing in the region as of late, and because of that, the Ridgway Township Supervisors have begun working on an oil and gas ordinance in an attempt to protect citizens from the oil and gas companies.
