Recycling center planning for renovations

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Community Recycling Center, located in the Stackpole Complex in St. Marys, is currently seeking bids for new flooring within the recycling center. Quotes have been collected to do the repairs with the latest quote figuring $11,900 from Bill Kinkead, a contractor operating out of Ridgway. However, Elk County Solid Waste Authority officials are hopeful members of the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission will be able to help offset a portion of the costs.

Donations for overseas troops successful

An initiative championed by the Elk County Veterans' Affairs office to reach out to area military members serving outside the continental United States has been a resounding success.
The office started with just three individuals announced in a Dec. 5 article but since then, the list has ballooned to 11.
"The donations have been coming in and we had some collection sites set up," said Leslie Neal, director of Elk County Veterans' Affairs. "The people have been very generous and we haven't even put out the bulk of our collection bins."

Robert Paul Anderson

Robert Paul Anderson, 54, of St. Marys died unexpectedly Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014.
Born in Ridgway, Robert was the son of the late Rodger and Mary Anderson.
Robert graduated from Ridgway Area High School in 1977, working most of his life as a logger and a forester. He loved fishing, the outdoors, dogs, baseball and most of all, his family.
He is survived by four children, Daniel, Dana, Cole and Megan.

James Berton Frederick

February 3, 2014

James Berton Frederick, 80, of McCullough Avenue, Brockway, died Saturday, Feb. 1 at his residence.
Born July 31, 1933 in Smicksburg, he was the son of the late Willis and Esther S. Davis Frederick. He was married to Betty Marie Raybuck and she died in 1988. He then married JoAnna M. Miller and she survives.
James was protestant by faith. He enjoyed gardening and hunting. He was a U.S. Navy Korean War veteran where he served on the U.S.S. Wasp. Retired, James worked as a laborer/foreman in multiple manufacturing facilities over the years.

Marie T. DeGroat

Marie T. DeGroat, 84, of Grant Road, Ridgway, died Jan. 30, 2014, at Ridgmont Assisted Living Facility.
She was born March 18, 1929, in Ridgway, the daughter of the late Robert DeGroat and Irene Moore.
She was a lifelong Ridgway resident.
She was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church and the St. John of God Society. She had been employed at Alltel for 42 years, retiring in 1991.

Ridgway logger injured in accident near Kane

KANE – A Ridgway logger was injured Friday in a work-related accident in the Allegheny National Forest near Kane.
Tim Holt, chief of the Kane Volunteer Fire Department, identified the victim as Tom Luchs. He is listed as the president of TMJ Logging of 25 Morgan Ave., Ridgway.

Cheryl M. Herzing

Cheryl M. Herzing, 57, of 111 Polk Ave., Ridgway, died unexpectedly Friday morning, Jan. 31, 2014 at Elk Regional Health Center.
She was born Feb. 16, 1956 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Robert G. and Joyce M. (Wehler) Vogt Sr. She married Daniel F. Herzing Jr. on Aug. 19, 1983.
She had resided in Ridgway since 1981 and was a former St. Marys resident. She was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church, the C.D. of A., a past St. Leo's Bingo Chairman, the Ridgway Little League, the Rocket Cheerleaders and the RAHS Gymnastics Boosters, and was also the caretaker of Yolonda Jeselinick.

Ridgway boys basketball wins on Senior Night

Ridgway's seniors filled up the stat sheet and filled up the win column for the Elkers on Senior Night.
A strong effort by the Ridgway seniors helped the Elkers to a 68-40 win over Sheffield Friday night at Ridgway Area High School.
Seniors Joe Horning, Dustin Cowan and Mason Stark were honored before the game.

Poor 1st quarter dooms Ramettes in 51-42 loss

JOHNSONBURG – Starting off on the wrong foot Friday night doomed the Ramettes.
Johnsonburg and Curwensville were evenly matched for three quarters but the Ramettes were unable to overcome at 14-3 first-quarter deficit, succumbing to a 51-42 loss.
